Clare dominate North Munster Schools

The North Munster Schools Cross Country Championships were held in ideal weather conditions at Salesian Secondary College Pallaskenry, County Limerick.
Clare athletes dominated all eight races and delivered some outstanding individual performances.
Áine Rouine (Scoil Mhuire, Ennistymon) was fourth in the minor girls’ 1,500m, with Coláiste  Mhuire, Ennis winning the team title on 22 points and (Kilkee) fourth on 62 points.
Micheal Clancy (Kilmihil) won the minor boys’ 2,000m.
Laura Power (Coláiste  Mhuire, Ennis) led from start to finish to take the Junior girls with another Team Title going to (Coláiste Mhuire Ennis)  on 22 points) with (Kilkee)  second on 25 points.
Stephan Rooney (Gael Choliste An Cháir) was very impressive when taking the junior boys and they also captured the team title on 31 points.
In the intermediate girls, Niamh Markham (St Flannan’s) finished a very good third, with 11 Clare athletes in the top 15 and all have qualified for the Munster Schools Cross Country in Cork IT on February 17.
Laura Egan (Kilmihil) was fourth, Shauna Harvey (Kilkee), fifth and Siobhán Nestor (Scoil Mhuire Ennistymon) 60 with (Kilkee)  winning the team title on 26 points from (Coláiste Mhuire Ennis)  on 35 points.
Ian Slobody (Kildysart) was second in the intermediate boys with Conor Madigan Kilrush seventh and Kilkee taking the silver medals in the team event on 54 points.
Irish international athlete Amy O’Donoghue from Meelick and Villiers Limerick took the senior ladies’ 5,000m and Declan Keniry (Kilkee) took gold in the senior boys’ 6,000m from Jake O’Regan (Kilkee), who finished second. Kilkee won the team title on 18 points.

All-Ireland Juvenile B and Masters Championships

The Athletics Association of Ireland juvenile B U-11, 13, 15, 17 and 19, plus inter-county relays for U-12 and U-14, along with the intermediate men and ladies’ and masters men’s and ladies’ cross country championships will take place in Alsaa, off the Old Swords Road, Dublin this Sunday, starting at 11.30am.
Clare will be well represented by athletes from St Cronan’s, Kilnaboy,  St Mary’s, St John’s, Marian,  Ennis Track Club, Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare, Kilmihil and Shannon.
The juvenile programme will start at 11.30am and will be followed by four senior races with the masters’ ladies 4,000m at 2pm, the masters men 7,000m at 2.20 pm, the intermediate ladies 4,000m at 2.50pm and the intermediate men’s 10,000m at 3.10pm.
Clare will be fielding teams in intermediate men, masters’ men and ladies, with Ennis Track Club contesting the National Intermediate Inter Club Awards and Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare contesting the National Masters Inter Club title.
In the intermediate men’s 10,000m, Brian McGinley (Ennis Track) will lead the Clare challenge along with Michael Shannon (Kilnaboy), Kenneth Rodgers (St John’s) Brian Murphy, Martin Glynn, Martin Grealish, James Liddane (Olympic Harriers)  and Paul Gallagher (St Finbarr’s).
In the masters men’s, Seamus Power (Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare) will contest the O-40s and he will take on his training partner Peter Matthews (Dundrum South Dublin).
This is the third year of the O-50s team event for both county and club and Clare have always been in the top three. Eugene Moynihan (Marian)  is a doubtful starter due to injury. Tom Mackey (Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare) will receive good support from club mates James Kenny and Michael Harvey, along with Michael Fennell (Civil Service).
In the masters ladies, Michelle O’Mahoney (Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare) will contest the O-45s with Cushla Murphy Hehir (Marian) contesting the masters ladies’ O-50s.

McArthur delivers a masterful performance in Nenagh

The Athletics Association of Ireland masters track and field championships were held at the Nenagh Indoor Arena and there were many fine individual performances, with Clare athletes taking home six gold, one silver and four bronze medals.
In the masters men’s O-45, Richard McArthur (St Cronan’s) recorded four big wins when taking the 60m, 200m, long jump and high jump.
Miriam Hamilton (Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare) was also a gold medal winner in the O-40s 1,500m  walk, with Martin Fitzpatrick (St Mary’s) taking the gold medal in the O-50s shot putt.
Michael Hayes won a bronze medal in the O-75s shot putt.
Richard McArthur (St Cronan’s) started the 2011 season on a high note, with some outstanding performances at a highly competitive national masters indoors meeting.
His first gold medal of the afternoon came in the 200m O-45s, with a time of 25.28.
Tommy Greene (St John’s) competed in the O-40s shot putt and he came away with a bronze medal with a throw of 10.47m. 
In the masters ladies O-40s 1500m walk, Miriam Hamilton (Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare) won the national title with a time of 8.32.18 while in the masters men O-50s shot putt Martin Fitzpatrick, the Munster champion, captured the national title for the first time with some fine throws.
