Clare athletes dominate the national field

THE Athletics Association of  Ireland Juvenile B Cross Country U-11 to U-19 plus inter-county relays for U-12s and U-14s, along with the intermediate and masters men’s and ladies’ championships were held in Lough Key Forest Park, Boyle, County Roscommon on Sunday.
Clare athletes dominated almost all county grades, the girls’ U-11 led home by Elaine Shannon (KilmurryIbrickane/North Clare) who finished in fourth place and led her club to silver medals.
In the boys’ U-11 800 metres, Clare dominated with eight athletes in the top 20 with Jamie Roche (Ennis Track) taking the gold, Paul Martin (Ennis Track) the silver medal and Patrick O’Rourke (Kilmurry-Ibrickane/North Clare) the bronze medal. Clare and Kilmurry-Ibrickane/North Clare won the team gold with Ennis Track winning the club silver medals.
In the U-13 girls’ race, Rachel Clancy (St John’s) finished fifth while in the U-13 boys’ A, Micheál Clancy (St John’s) finished 12th. In the U-13 boys’ B, Kevin Mulcaire (Ennis Track) won the gold with Clare taking the silver medals.
In the girls’ U-15, Clare athletes came to the fore taking the national team gold led home by Jean Clancy (St John’s) in fifth position with St John’s winning the inter-club title.
Ian Slobody (Kilmihil) won gold in the boys’ U-15 and he led Clare to team gold with St Cronan’s winning the inter-club title.
Róisín Looney (Kilmihil) won a bronze medal in the girls’ U-17 with St John’s winning the boys’ U-17 inter-club title led home by Shane Keane who finished fifth.
Niall Leamy (St Cronan’s) won gold in the boys’ U-19.
In the 4 x 500metres relay, Clare (girls’ U-12) won the silver medals while in the masters ladies O-45s, Michelle O’Mahoney (Kilmurry-Ibrickane/North Clare) won a bronze medal.
In the masters men O-50, Clare won the silver medals while in the intermediate ladies, Marie Carey (Ennis Track) finished 14th leading Clare to bronze medals.

Masters men 7,000 metres
O-50s: 2. Clare (77. Eugene Moynihan, 86. James Kenny, 95. Tom Mackey, 97. Frank Garrihy, 149. Michael Harvey, 150 Michael Quinlivan) = 654 points.

Meanwhile, Niall Leamy from St Cronan’s AC won the gold medal in the All-Ireland U-19 5,000m at the juvenile B cross country championships in Boyle last Sunday.
Niall was the only competitor in this race and it may well have been that the inclement weather conditions which led to the cancellation of a number of sporting events prevented some competitors from travelling to these championships. Niall wasn’t deterred, however and he went ahead and completed the course despite the absence of competition.
