Clare athletes dominate in Tipperary championships


The Munster Juvenile B Track and Field Championships for U-9 to U-16 plus the pentathlon for U-12 to U-19 were held in hot conditions at the Templemore track in Tipperary at the weekend.

Clare athletes captured 10 gold, 10 silver and nine bronze medals, with many fine individual performances recorded. Keisha Attwell, St Mary’s, was first on the podium taking gold in the girls U-9 ball throw and she also came home in third spot in the 300m with Niamh Conlon, Kilmihil, taking bronze in the girls’ U-9 60m.
In the girls’ U-10 there was gold in the ball throw for Willow Swire, Shannon, while in U-11, Tara Kelly, St Mary’s, won gold in the 60m and silver in the long jump. In the 600m. Emer Keane, Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare, finished strong to capture the silver medal.
Chantel Burke, St Mary’s, and Elaine Shannon, Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare, competed in the girls’ U-12 80m. Chantel captured the silver medal with Elaine Shannon in fourth spot and both girls were again in the thick of the action in the 600m, with Chantel producing a fine piece of front running to take the gold medal while Elaine put in a mighty finish on the home straight to snatch the bronze.
In the girls’ pentathlon U-13, Cliodhna Blake took part in four events, taking the silver medal. In the U-14s, two Clare athletes were in action. Derbhile Ryan, who hails from Clonlara and runs with Nenagh AC, took the gold medal with a total of 2732 points and a close second was Rachel Clancy, St John’s, on 2469 points.
Eimear Hillery Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare, competing for the first time in the girls’ U-16 pentathlon, captured the gold medal with a total of 1855 points. In the boys’ U-11 pentathlon, Thomas Clancy, St John’s, came away with a silver medal with a total of 1437 points.
