‘Champion Awards set for April

The annual Clare Champion sports and community awards will be presented at a gala function on Friday, April 15.

On the night, the teams of the senior hurling and football championships from 2010 will be honoured together with the leading performers in a number of other sporting disciplines and in the area of community involvement.
The scheme is now in its sixth year and
highlights the Clare Champion’s support for sport in the county. In addition to this scheme, the company sponsors the County Senior Hurling (Clare Champion Cup) and football (Cusack cup) leagues, Cumann na mBunscol an Chláir and the Clare camogie U-16 competition.
The teams of the championship for 2010 will be announced in next week’s issue and it is expected that county champions, Crusheen and Doonbeg, will dominate the selections, capping memorable years for their clubs.
After a number of near misses, Crusheen delivered on the promise of recent seasons when they won their first-ever senior title, beating the defending champions, Cratloe, in the decider. Doonbeg ended a barren spell for the club when they won the senior football title, beating Liscannor in the final.
