Centre of welcome mooted for Glór

PROPOSALS for Glór to become the centre for a variety of nationally important cultural events “warrant further research”, local councillors have been told.
At a recent meeting of Ennis East Electoral Area councillors, Councillor Johnny Flynn put forward a number of potential uses for the Ennis venue to be put before the board of Glór.
Glór is currently undergoing processes to develop both a company strategy for 2012 – 2014 and a three to five-year business plan.
According to Councillor Flynn, the facility could become the home for a National Centre of Welcome in 2013, the Year of the Gathering and into the future. He also urged that Glór, in association with Clare local authorities and local heritage societies, consider making an application to the Minister for Arts and the National Famine Commemoration Committee for consideration of Ennis to host the sixth National Famine Commemoration in 2013.
“There would also be the potential use of Glór at the centre of a year-long programme of related events,” he added.
A public consultation process to establish the feasibility of holding an annual world music festival centred on Glór was also suggested. “Ireland doesn’t have a world music festival and I know somebody with a lot of experience in this that would like to get involved,” said Councillor Flynn.
Another possibility is the targeting of a Siamsa-type programme for tourists. “This would give an opportunity for performers, in particular young performers, to gain seasonal work and stage experience,” he added.
Eamon O’Dea, senior executive engineer, told the meeting, “Proposals in relation to Glór warrant future research and these could be forwarded to the director and board of Glór for consideration as part of their planning process. The council works closely with Glór in order to support it in achieving its strategic objectives and also in developing the economic cultural potential of Ennis Town.”
