Power surge sends St Flannan’s into Dean Ryan Semi-Finals

Munster U-16.5A PPS Hurling Championship Quarter-Final St Flannan’s College 1-19 Midleton CBS (Cork) 1-11 AN auspicious start for St Flannan’s in their Dean Ryan Cup quest after a powerful second half display brushed off the opening challenge of Midleton CBS on away soil to progress to the last four on Wednesday afternoon, reports Eoin Brennan. With 19 Dean Ryan titles between them, this heavyweight contest inevitably began with a blow-for-blow pattern before St Flannan’s had to respond to a Midleton goal to regain parity by the break at 0-9 to 1-6. A miserly full-back line of Joe Casey, Paddy Nagle and Ronan Kilroy were instrumental in keeping the home side at bay while inspirational centre-back James Hegarty and midfield duo Eoin Kennedy and Dylan Keane Hayes were perfect linkmen as St Flannan’s upped the ante to outscore their hosts by 1-10 to 0-5 in the second half. Full-forward Oisin Whelan, who finished with nine points to his name including three …

Post Primary games return next week

Reigning Harty Cup champions St Flannan’s College face a tricky first defence against Thurles CBS when the Munster Senior A Post-Primary Hurling Championship recommences after a two year gap on Wednesday, November 10th. The Ennis school, who bridged a 15 year gap in 2019, will be wary of a Thurles CBS side that were All-ireland Junior A (Under 16.5) finalists as recently as 2018. The other opening round tie of note is the All-Cork rematch of Midleton CBS and CBC Cork that the latter last won to book their place in the 2019 decider against St Flannan’s. Indeed, regardless of the result, St Flannan’s College and Thurles CBS will take on the winners and losers of that Rebel showdown for places in the quarter-finals. St Joseph’s Tulla are the other Clare representative in the flagship hurling championship, with their opener against De La Salle Waterford being a winner-takes-all tie for a direct passage into the last eight. In the Munster …

Attewell ready to Rock the ring in national finals

Ennis boxer Keisha Attewell will be aiming to become a National Champion on Saturday evening. The Clare woman faces a difficult challenge as standing opposite her inside the ring will be three time National Champion Kaci Rock, whose father Jim fought professionally and was the only man to hold Irish titles in four different weight classes. Attewell and Rock meet in the 66kg final in Dublin on Saturday evening with all 22 National Elite Championship finals being broadcast live on TG4. The 19-year-old is relaxed heading in to the bout as she has previously trained with her Wicklow opponent. “I’m feeling confident. I’ve been training away everyday and doing a lot of work to get ready for these Championships so I’m feeling good. I’ve sparred her (Kaci Rock) before. She likes to come in close and let off hooks so I know how to approach this fight. I’m practicing something different to try and trouble her but I can’t say …

Crunch time in Senior Hurling Championship

Senior Hurling Championship Round 3 Group 3 Broadford v Crusheen at Cusack Park, Sunday 12pm The Canon Hamilton may be out of reach but this is still a county final to both Broadford and Crusheen in a must-not-lose affair to avoid the unrepentant relegation play-offs that will cull two teams to intermediate level for 2022. It’s a difficult tie to call really as both have failed to register a victory so far, albeit that Broadford have shown the better form by putting it up to both Ballyea and Cratloe whereas Crusheen have had much less to shout about against the same opponents. Broadford’s battling qualities will be required as their track record in relegation play-offs isn’t good and therefore this represents the 2019 intermediate champions’ best chance of survival. Crusheen meanwhile haven’t won a Senior A Championship tie since 2019, a five match losing streak that won’t be easy to arrest on Sunday. Their transition stems from an ageing core …

RUGBY: Considine, McMahon and Ireland see World Cup dreams end

IRELAND suffered a heartbreaking 20-18 defeat to Scotland as they saw their World Cup dreams banished, reports Ivan Smyth. With Clare’s Eimear Considine and Edel McMahon both starting, Ireland led this game by 18-13 heading in to the 80th minute. However, Chloe Rollie scored a try for Scotland before Sarah Law tapped over the conversion against Ireland’s 14 players. With Italy top of the table heading in to this game, the equation was simple for Ireland beforehand. A bonus point win would see them finish top of the table and qualify for the World Cup. The girls in green also had the safety net of a place in the repechage qualifying tournament with a second-place finish. A draw would also have meant Ireland finished second place in a group containing Scotland, Italy and Spain. Considine threatened in attack in the opening half while McMahon looked assured in the back row as Ireland failed to make their forays forward count on …

Championship silverware up for grabs

Junior B Football Championship Final Parteen v Kilrush Shamrocks at Éire Óg, Sunday 3pm Jilted at the penultimate stage of last year’s championship, both Parteen and Kilrush will be determined to make the most of their opportunity for some much-needed championship silverware in Ennis on Saturday. Amidst contrasting stages of development, it’s an intriguing final pairing as Parteen have had to start from scratch in order to rebuild their footballing wing from the bottom up, with several years of underage development finally coming to fruition at adult level in what is only their third season back in the Junior ranks. The experience of Eanna Mulvihill and former Michael Cusack’s talisman Colm Davoren are crucial to what is very much a youthful side that includes current Clare Under 20 hurler Jack Kirwan, Gavin Higgins, Tom Egan, Eoghan O’Connell and the lively Ewan O’Brien. 2019 was also a significant year for Kilrush who lost their long-held Junior A status, with the Shams’ …
