THE late Dr Patrick Hillery’s association with Lahinch Golf Club was recalled at the famed links course on Tuesday evening when a seat dedicated to his memory was unveiled.The decision to honour Dr Hillery was made by the club’s council last year under the captaincy of Austin Slattery. A household name in Clare, the Spanish Point-born doctor was a TD, government minister and Ireland’s first European Commissioner before serving two terms as president of Ireland up to 1990.At this week’s ceremony, Mr Slattery recalled Dr Hillery’s association with the Lahinch club from when he became a member on June 24, 1950. He spoke about the cups Dr Hillery won as a member of the club, the Resident’s Cup in 1952 and the Bogberry Cup, an open matchplay competition, in 1953. In 1980, when he was president of Ireland, he won the Golf Links Cup on the August Bank Holiday Monday, a major stroke play event which attracted a huge entry.In …

TOM Foley from Dangan in Tulla was part of the Irish South Showjumping team at the European finals last weekend. The team won silver medals and Tom finished sixth overall. Ireland had to jump off with Belgium for the medal last week when Germany won the gold. It was the Tulla teenager’s first time competing in the European championships and he is eligible for this event for another two years.A third year pupil at St Joseph’s in Tulla where he will be sitting for his Junior Certificate exam in the coming year, 14-year-old Tom has been competing since he was five-years-old.“He was on the winning team in Holland two weeks ago and on the Irish team, which also did well in France in April where Tom won the grand prix event,” his mother Carmel explained from the RDS in Dublin this week, where Tom will compete today, Thursday and Friday on his pony Dididoe, which came from the Netherlands.“There was …

KILDYSART angler Patrick Garry finished second at the World Cup Trout Fly Angling Championship, which was held in Lough Mask, Ballinrobe in Mayo last weekend.  Now into its 53rd year, the championship is one of the biggest tournaments in Europe. Six hundred and eighty participants took part, while approximately 120 qualified for last Monday’s final. Mr Garry qualified for the final on the Friday, which was one of the four days, from Thursday to Sunday, in which those who took part could try to make the final. “It fished poorly on the Thursday this year. It was flat calm that day and there was only 10 fish caught by nine people. On the Friday I caught two fish there and there was 60 fish caught overall that day, which was a good day’s fishing,” the Kildysart man, who regularly fishes Gortlass Lake, explained.
