Senior Ladies’ Football West Clare Gaels 2-8Kilmihil 2-5West Clare Gaels and Banner ladies will meet in the Clare ladies’ senior football final this Saturday evening after they overcame Kilmihil and Cooraclare in their respective semi-finals.Kilmihil went into this semi-final at Doonbeg on Saturday carrying the favourites’ tag to win through to the decider. After all, they were in the final last year and had never hid their determination to go one better this time around.

First-half dominance proves vital for Newmarket victory

Newmarket 1-13Shannon Gaels 3-5A strong second-half fightback wasn’t enough for Shannon Gaels in this Intermediate Ladies’ Football Championship final at Lissycasey.Newmarket dominated the first half and led by 12 points at the mid-point. In the second half, the Gaels dominated but time wasn’t on their side and Newmarket held on for victory.The winners laid the foundations for victory at midfield, where Chloe Morey and Jenny Kelly dominated. The Gaels had the opening two points but these were cancelled out by Newmarket, who then took control. Points from Áine O’Brien and Jenny Kelly were followed by a Nikki Kaiser goal before Kaiser and Kelly followed with a brace of points each. Three further points followed, to leave Newmarket ahead at the interval on a score of 1-11 to 0-2.At the start of the second half the Gaels won a penalty when Sarah Bohannon was fouled but Colette Corry’s effort was wide of the target. Sky ride

MORE than 1,800 people participated in the Sky Ride Etape Hibernia event which took place in Clare at the weekend. The sold-out race was Ireland’s first ever closed-road mass participation cycling event and attracted competitors from all over Ireland and the UK, as well as from throughout Europe and USA.  Participants cycled 82 miles of traffic-free roads from the Gort Road in Ennis through Corofin, Ballyvaughan, Fanore, Liscannor, Spanish Point and back to Ennis’ Market.Thousands of spectators turned out in excellent weather conditions to cheer on the participants who included cycling legend Seán Kelly, British Olympic gold medallist Denise Lewis and Sky News presenter Dermot Murnaghan.“This represents a milestone day for mass participation events in Ireland considering this is the country’s first closed road non-professional cycle event.
