CATHY McCafferty was a teenage protestor on Bloody Sunday and at this week’s meeting of Shannon Town Council, the Sinn Féin representative said the Saville Report had provided some closure.

COUNCILLOR Gerry Flynn has lambasted Clare County Council following news that it has to pay over €87,000 to Shannon Development, after the sale of lands at Illaunmanagh for the development of a crematorium.Councillor Flynn objected to the decision to sell the lands and says the fact that the council will now not end up with the sale agree price of €140,000 has vindicated him.In a report issued to councillors representing the Shannon Electoral Area, Michael McNamara acknowledged that the council has no option but to pay the €87,000.“You will recall that last September the council approved the sale of 1.29 acres of land adjacent to the burial ground in Shannon to Illaunmanagh Ltd for the purposes of their constructing a crematorium on the lands. SHANNON is in danger of developing a “tatty image” because graffiti artists are defacing public property around the town.That’s the view of Councillor Patricia McCarthy who supported a call at this month’s electoral area meeting to enlist the help of the gardaí in trying to arrest the practice and to get those responsible to desist.Accepting that the artists display a level of creativity in their work, Councillor McCarthy suggested that they could be better employed imparting their talents to young children in a more appropriate environment. “Because of their clear style, it should be possible to identify those who are responsible. THE Alitalia plane crash of 1960, in which 34 people were killed, was commemorated at Clonloghan Cemetery on Wednesday evening.The Italian ambassador to Ireland was represented at the event by Dr Fabio Bartolozzi, while Canon Reuben Butler gave a talk on the history behind the event.The crash occurred in the early hours of February 26. The plane had made a 45-minute stop at Shannon, having been en route from Naples and Rome to New York. However, shortly after leaving the tarmac in Shannon, it crashed at the cemetery in Clonloghan, killing most of those on board.Vincent McInerney of Stonehall is a member of the Clonloghan Cemetery Group but he was just a schoolboy at the time of the crash, which he remembers well.“The plane must have come in very low because it hit the top of the headstones and it went through the graveyard and crashed into the next field.
