Record-breaking turnout at Gort Show

THE 29th Gort Show, which took place on Sunday, was the biggest in its history according to organisers who claim there was up to a four-fold increase in attendance compared to previous years. “The whole showground was full with families, couples and individuals having fun, being amazed and simply relaxing and having a great traditional summer Sunday at an agricultural show,” said the show’s organising secretary Amanda Norton. “The grounds literally buzzed with excitement and fun. There were amazing sights such as the steam-powered traction engine brought all the way from County Cork, the model railway which came from North Mayo, the many multi-coloured craft and trade stalls and the incredible, record breaking display of flowers, vegetables, cooking, crafts and photographs in the main hall. There were dogs, rabbits and snakes, ducks, geese and champion chickens. There were horses, ponies and donkeys from all over Clare and Galway,” she added. Top marks for O’Briensbridge Loop Walks

TOURISM and leisure-related businesses received a welcome boost this week after the latest national inspection report awarded top marks to the O’Briensbridge Loop Walks.O’Briensbridge Community Group chairman, Mick Murtagh expects the national walking routes from the village to Clonlara will become even more widely used after the route scooped an impressive 98% in the assessment completed by the National Trails Office.Two of the three loops, the Old Barge Red Loop and the shorter Erina Canal Blue Loop, were inspected by a National Trails Office inspector on May 24 last.According to the report, the walks are generally in a superb condition, with the standard of marking rated as excellent.The group was praised for looking after the majority of issues highlighted in the previous report. Glenmore-Kiltumper scheme falls foul of Clár funding

RESIDENTS in Glenmore and Kiltumper (Kilmihil) are unlikely to have their group water scheme financed in the near future due to an absence of Clár funding for water and sewerage schemes. This is despite the fact that the scheme has gone to tender and a contractor has been appointed. Clare County Council submitted an application for a Clár grant on December 19, 2008. However, in reply to Clare County Council, Clár said that the Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government had suspended funding for Clár water and sewerage schemes on August 8, 2008. It later transpired, in a letter to Clare County Council, from the Department of the Environment, that a modified Clár group water scheme could be introduced in Clare in 2009. Glenmore – Kiltumper met the criteria and a submission was again sent to Clár on November 11, 2009. Hopes high for Ruan wellness centre

A GROUP of North Clare residents are hoping to develop a wellness centre on the edge of the Burren, which could employ between 12 and 18 people, it emerged recently.  Fintan O’Brien, Kieran Casey and Brian O’Shaughnessy applied to Clare County Council to construct a wellness centre with a manager’s apartment or office, 15 ‘wellness’ tourist accommodation units, a storage shed, gazebo, waste water treatment, 32 parking spaces and associated works at Ranaghan, Ruan, four and a half miles from Corofin. According to a document in the planning file signed by Michael Corey for architectural and environmental consultants Corey Stevens and Associates, Ennis the proposed development would be “a unique tourism product” with a wellness centre at its core. Businesses benefit from racing crowds

RACE week brought more than its traditional lift to the South Galway economy with a number of businesses in Gort experiencing a higher volume of trade than last year.The Galway Races Summer Festival draws crowds from across the country and traffic from the Mid and South-West regions travelling through the town traditionally provides a boost to business.According to a number of the town’s most prominent businesses, trade was up on last year. For O’Grady’s Bar and Restaurant in The Square, race week is always busy but this year was exceptionally so.“It is one of the biggest weeks in the year for us. It is two and a half times what a normal week is in the summer time. Business was up on last year. It was really a mix of locals and passing traffic.
