Parking price cut could lead to €250,000 loss

A REDUCTION in the carparking charge in Ennis to €1 would result in a loss of income of more than quarter of a million euro to the local authority.At a recent meeting of Ennis Town Council, Councillor Johnny Flynn urged that the council reduce the standard parking charges of €1.30 to €1 and plan to bring it down further within the next three years.According to Councillor Flynn since the introduction of the €1.30 charge there has been an annual loss in revenue to the council of €100,000. “Residents and visitors to Ennis are looking for value, and where you add value you increase and maintain turnover,” he said.Councillor Flynn stated, “Every other business in the town has had to reduce its prices, if we continue in this way we will lose another €100,000 if we don’t and that’s irresponsible.”He was supported by Councillor Mary Howard who said that the parking charges are deterring shoppers from coming to Ennis. “There is …

New digs for planning office in the new year

THE planning office of Ennis Town Council is set to move to Aras Contae an Chlair in the new year. Town manager Ger Dollard has stated that the relocation is being made “out of necessity” as the council strives to make better use of resources. He has insisted that this does not affect the town council’s role as a planning authority and that delivery of service to the customer is of “paramount importance”.He was responding as Councillor Mary Howard voiced concern about the move in light of proposals to abolish town councils. This was echoed by Councillor Johnny Flynn who described it as “turkeys voting for Christmas”.However, Mr Dollard commented, “The councillors will be aware of the significant reductions in staff that have occurred within all Clare local authorities. MOVES by businesses to boost the local economy are making a big impression throughout the country, with the national broadcaster among fans of the latest venture by the Ennis Development Forum.Following the success of last year’s Ennis Share the Feeling viral clip, the development forum are this year urging people to Share the Dream with their newest production.This year’s video clip, featuring plenty of familiar places and faces, is already heading towards 10,000 views between Youtube and Vimeo.
