Council rejects surfers’ pier criticism

Clare County Council senior engineer Tom Tiernan has rejected claims made last week by the West Coast Surf Club that the local authority has “not managed to engage in any meaningful manner with the surfing community” on the Doolin Pier project. “Clare County Council wishes to absolutely refute statements by West Coast Surf Club in relation to the proposed Doolin Pier development and the consultation that has taken place between the council and the surfing community through the course of planning procedures,” Mr Tiernan declared.“It is important to point out that the surfing community is not the only stakeholder upon which the pier development could have an impact.  This development, if approved, will have a significant impact on the commercial, residential and tourism-orientated communities in both North Clare and the Aran Islands and the many stakeholders associated with these interests are entitled to equal and fair consultation opportunities in this context,” he continued. Green light given for Lisdoonvarna supermarket

Clare County Council has given the green light for a major supermarket, retail and commercial development in Lisdoonvarna estimated to cost up to €3 million, despite the economic recession.John Burke, C/O Sean Dockry and Associates, Hynes Building, St Augustine Street, Galway, has obtained planning approval for the construction of a mixed-use development as previously granted in February 2007 at St Brendan’s Road, Lisdoonvarna.This consists of a 453m2 supermarket plus ancillary staff facilities and delivery area, three retail and commercial units, one office unit and one three-bedroom apartment, subject to 26 conditions. A number of applications for extensions of time or developments, which were previously granted by the authority throughout the county, have been refused over the past year.A spokesman for the developers told The Clare Champion it could take a number of years before this site is fully developed.According to one of the conditions, the developer has to pay a contribution of €55,386 to the council in respect of public …

Couple object to Finavarra shed extension

AN appeal has been lodged with An Bord Pleanála after Clare County Council granted planning permission for retention permission for an extension to an existing agricultural shed at Finavarra, along with permission for the lowering of existing roofline of the extension and completion of works.
