Niall shortlisted for No Name awards

A South Galway teenager has outshone 2,000 others to make it to the final of a national competition, it was announced this week. Niall Perrill from Gort No Name Club will participate in the No Name Club National Youth Awards Final in Kilkenny on Saturday. Fellow Galway teenager Shauna Naughton from Mountbellew No Name Club also made it to the final 12. Travelling to the event to support Niall and celebrate their involvement with the national youth organisation will be over 50 teenagers and adult committee members from Gort No Name Club while 30 will make the journey from Mountbellew.Almost 200 teenagers and adult leaders from Galway will travel to Kilkenny, with Athenry, Claregalway and Headford No Name Clubs also taking part. No Name Club teenage members are known as hosts and hostesses and Niall and Shauna were selected as the representative hostess for the Mid-West Region to compete in the national final. Gaelscoil na bhFilí officially opened

The Minister for Training and Skills, Ciaran Cannon TD, this week performed the official opening of Gaelscoil na bhFilí in Gort, County Galway. Gaelscoil na bhFilí has a current enrolment of 59 pupils. The initial driving force behind the school was Peterswell man James Fahy, who very quickly enlisted the help of an enthusiastic group of parents who, collectively, worked tirelessly to get the school established. The Gaelscoil derives its name from the family connection between James and the poet known colloquially as ‘The Poet Fahey’ – his father.The official opening afforded the school the opportunity to showcase its new suite of classrooms and ancillary facilities, which were donated to the school by GAMA Construction.  Many dignitaries attended the opening including Galway and Clarenbridge hurling star Alan Kerins, Fine Gael TD Ciárán Cannon, Noírín Ní Loinsigh from Gaelscoileanna, Pádraig Mac Fhlannachadha from Conradh na Gaelige, Dónal Ó Conaill ón bhForas, local school principals, clergy, parents and students. Fashionable sum raised by No Name Club

OVER €4,000 has been raised through a charity fashion show that was organised by teenagers from Gort No Name Club and brought over 300 people out. The event was held at The Centre on Friday, March 25 and brought people from the local community and surrounding regions together to raise money for Croí.

Coole 10km road run/walk taking place

The Coole 10km road run/walk will take place in Coole Park, Gort on Sunday, April 17 at 11am. The event is been organised by Ardrahan Defibrillator Committee and all proceeds will go towards the cost of training 30 local people in the locality.

School transport charges criticised

Changes to the school transport scheme criteria and the introduction of new charges means “an imposition on parents who are already overburdened”.“Schools have just been notified of the introduction of charges for school transport from the commencement of the 2011/2012 school year, which is next September. Eligible primary pupils are described as those who live more than two miles from their school, are attending their nearest school and will be charged at a rate of €50 per pupil for school transport up to a family maximum of €110. Families with both primary and post-primary pupils will face a maximum charge of €650 per annum. Pupils with a valid medical card will be exempt from these charges,” explained Joe Killeen, INTO (Irish National Teachers Organisation) district representative for Galway and Roscommon. “Pupils who live within two miles of their school or are not attending their nearest school will be required to pay an annual charge of €200 for a concessionary ticket …

Successful St Patrick’s Day

There was a large number of participants and onlookers at Gort’s St Patrick’s Day Parade last Thursday. The event was, once again, blessed with dry weather and with the repaving of the streets almost complete, residents and businesses took the opportunity to show the town off, with most shop windows decorated for the occasion.The large number of entrants took part on foot, bicycles and on floats, with many opting to embrace the theme, Reeling in the Years.Gort No-Name Club, which was promoting this week’s fashion show, was adjudged to have the best overall float.Cahill’s HomeValue Hardware was awarded the prize for best effort, with its depiction of 1960’s TV programme The Waltons. ­Cahill’s was also awarded the prize for best commercial entry. Gort Fair-Trade committee was the runners-up in this category.The Gallery Café were the most humorous with their entry entitled “We’re on the move” portraying their move from The Square to Bridge Street.
