No GP Found for Feakle

THE HSE has this week taken a decision to end the locum arrangements in Feakle after it failed to attract any applications for the doctor’s position having advertised the position three times. In a statement issued to The Clare Champion, a spokesperson for the HSE has said, “having been unsuccessful in attracting a candidate after the third occasion of advertising the GMS list in Feakle, a decision has been taken to initiate procedures in the coming weeks to end the locum arrangements in Feakle and to disperse the current GMS listing using the Choice of Doctor option available to all GMS patients”. The HSE confirmed that despite opening the post up to other practices, no applications were received prior to last Friday’s deadline. “Regrettably, on the third occasion of advertising the GMS list in Feakle, no application has been received. Clare patients ‘shortchanged’ by ‘unsafe’ overcrowding

University Hospital Limerick.

CLARE patients who are being transported to the University Hospital Limerick (UHL) are being “shortchanged” due to the “unsafe” levels of overcrowding, a nursing union has claimed. SIPTU health division representative, Tony Kenny, also expressed concern about the increased risk infection being posed to patients, who were among the 47 waiting for treatment on trolleys on Monday morning in the emergency department. According to the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO), the number of patients waiting to be admitted fell to 35 on Tuesday. The union is supporting calls from the INMO for the implementation of the Major Emergency Plan at UHL to bring about a level of control and safety at the emergency department. Mr Kenny claimed, at one stage, an ambulance was waiting about 20 minutes to transfer a patient from the vehicle into the emergency department because there was no spare trolley to accommodate them. Noting that the recent HIQA report outlined the emergency department was not …

Elderly to choose food, fuel or medication

Age Action has urged the Government to take “meaningful steps” in the upcoming Budget to assist older people, who are struggling as a result of the cumulative effect of recent austerity budgets. “Many older people are struggling to heat their homes, pay for their medications and adapt their homes so they can continue to live in them,” Age Action’s head of advocacy and communications, Eamon Timmins said. “The choices which older people are being forced to make – choosing between food, fuel and medication – are simply unacceptable,” he declared when addressing the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection on Wednesday. Mr Timmins outlined the results of research it carried out earlier this year with its members across Ireland to assess the impact which austerity measures were having. “From people going to bed early and staying in bed longer in the morning in order to stay warm, to people cutting back on food, older people revealed how they …
