Clare’s ancient roots unearthed in Fanore

Clare was home to hunters and gatherers before farmers, an archaeological dig in Fanore has confirmed. The shell midden, or cooking area, being excavated in the North Clare village is the earliest archaeological site unearthed in the county and has uncovered rare evidence of Mesolithic hunter-gathers in the area.

Council deficit of €47,000

CLARE County Council’s unaudited annual financial statement for 2011 shows the local authority ended the year with a deficit of only €47,000, despite a reduction in Government funding of more than €9 million. Total Government funding received by Clare County Council during 2011 was €66.8 million, compared to €78.2m in 2010.
