Clare pupils to shine at UL concert

CLARE will be well represented in a choir of over 450 secondary school students from the Killaloe and Limerick dioceses that will give great voice to the Limerick National City of Culture’s programme next Thursday with a first concert of its kind at University Concert Hall. The students from counties Clare, Limerick, Offaly and Tipperary will form the largest choir ever to perform at the University Concert Hall when they deliver their Seinn 2014 performance on  April 3. The event is unique, not just because of the massive size of the choir but because most of its members will be coming together for the first time ever that morning after rehearsing remotely in recent weeks. Lead vocalists and instrumentalists have, however, met up several times in the run-up to the performance. Treemendous effort in Ennis estate

The Residents Association of Aughanteeroe Estate on the Gort Road in Ennis have been making tree-mendous efforts to ensure the area is looking good. The association has just completed an extensive tree planting programme, designed to give a greener look to the estate. Over the past few weekends, members of the Residents Association have been busy planting saplings of native Mountain Ash and Flowering Cherry which were supplied by Coillte through the Environment Section of Clare County Council. Secretary of the Residents Association, Róisín Browne, said that they were indebted to both Coillte and The County Council for making the trees available. “They will help to make the estate more attractive visually and highlight the green areas” she said. She paid special tribute to Brendan Moroney of Clare County Council Environment for his help and advice for the planting programme, which is hoped to be continued in the years to come. Business is booming for Zimmer

By Owen Ryan THE number employed at Zimmer Orthopedic Manufacturing Limited has reached a new high following the addition of dozens of new staff in recent weeks. General Manager Adrian Furey said that the company has had an excellent experience since coming to Shannon six years ago, leading to its expansion. “Quarter one is nearly over and during it we have added around 30 jobs which has taken us over the 300 mark this week,” said Mr Furey. He said that the Shannon operation compares very favourably with Zimmer’s other manufacturing sites around the world. “It has been a very positive experience in Shannon, we like how the plant is set up, it’s regarded as one of the best plants in the network at the moment, which is a nice place to be.” He said that locating in Shannon offered the company a number of advantages. “I think the corporation tax is a positive for the country, I think the …

Lovely Old Miltown on display

A HUGE amount of old photographs, postcards, articles from newspapers and other memorabilia is going on display at SuperValu in Miltown Malbay from March 30 to April 6. Most of the material comes from the late Kathleen Kelly and her son, Cyril and daughter-in law-Patsy now have her archive. “Cyril’s mother Kathleen used to take an awful lot of photographs so we have all of those and we decided to let the public see them,” said Kathleen. One magazine article from the 1930s will be on show. “Malachy Hynes was a journalist from Miltown Malbay and he wrote an article for a travel magazine. He wrote about four places and I have a picture of the four of those. It’s laminated and there’s the writing in the middle and the four photographs around it,” said Kathleen. There is also a programme from the 1945 West Clare Show, at which there were 663 entrants and one from the Clonbony races of …

All in a Fludde for Limerick flood relief

By Dan Danaher SIX performers from South-East Clare are raising their voices to support a relief fund for a community devastated by flooding in Limerick City. Deana Crowe, Alexandra, Eda and Rebecca Kiely from Meelick, Meabh Nolan from Ardnacrusha and Sinead O’Donnell Stolz from Cratloe are all performing in a community opera to raise funds for St Mary’s Parish – Flood Relief Fund. As part of the Limerick City of Culture 2014 celebrations, St Mary’s Cathedral presents the new production of Benjamin Britten’s classic opera Noye’s Fludde (Noah’s Flood ) for six performances from March 28 to April 1. Deana Crowe said, “We’re nervous and excited as it is much a larger production that we realised and there will be over 350 people at each performance but it has been great for my confidence and I’m glad I am part of it.” Eda Kiely said, “My teacher, Cecilia Madden at Ardscoil Mhuire in Corbally encouraged me to audition and I’m …

Brave Bunratty girl volunteer of the year

A COUNTY Clare girl has been honoured for her courage and willingness to help other. Elysha Ní Chuláin, a fifth-year student at Coláiste Íde in Dingle, Kerry has been crowned the 2014 All Ireland Youth Volunteer of the Year. The Bunratty teenager and Dayna Ní Shíocháin, a student at Gaelcholáiste Mhuire, North Monastery, County Cork, were launded at the eighth annual Pramerica Spirit of Community Awards, presented by Republic of Ireland football manager, Martin O’Neill. Sixteen-year-old, Elysha was honoured for her volunteering activities with Our Lady’s Hospital for Sick Children in Crumlin and Barretstown Camp in Kildare. At five, Elysha was diagnosed with a brain tumour. She was hospitalised in Crumlin for 10 years. While there, she underwent chemotherapy and several surgeries, which have left her with permanent kidney damage and blind in one eye. “When I was eight, my tired body gave up. I had a massive heart attack and was on life support. It took a long time, …

Couple face 20 years of health checks

A Kilkee couple will require medical screening for the next 20 years, following the discovery of potentially dangerous brown asbestos near their home, at one of the nine unauthorised dump sites in West Clare. Former Kilkee town councillor, PJ Linnane, has confirmed  that one of the country’s top lung specialists, Dr Joe Commiskey, has recommended testing for him and his wife for at least two decades. The retired councillor, who hasn’t allowed his grandchildren to visit his house since June 2013 amid fears of contamination from a landfill site near the decommissioned Lislanaghan reservoir, also believes his neighbours will also need to be screened. His home is just off the Kilkee to Doonbeg road, which is part of the Wild Atlantic Way route. Clare County Council has confirmed it has commissioned an “external independent investigation” into the circumstances surrounding the depositing of asbestos-cement materials at a number of sites throughout West Clare. Calendar Girls top ticket

JESSICA QUINN THERE’S ‘barely’ a ticket left for the Ennis Players performances of Calendar Girls, which opened on Wednesday to a packed house at Glór. A “phenomenal” surge in ticket sales has taken place in recent days, with those involved in the charity production crediting the boost to the play’s exposure in last week’s front page of The Clare Champion, media sponsors for the project. The brave ladies of the cast were photographed by award winning photographer John Kelly with just a few Champion’s to cover their modesty. And their daring move even hit the national airwaves. In the run up to Wednesday’s opening night, Cormac O’Sullivan of Ennis Players said, “We’ve been averaging ticket sales 150 a day for the last four or five days, which is quite phenomenal and it was really down to, I think, the front page of The Clare Champion.
