Gale force science in Newmarket

SIXTH class students at Scoil na Maighdine Mhuire in Newmarket on Fergus have been preparing for the BT Young Scientist and Technology exhibition where they will present their project entitled ‘Power in the wind’.The school has its own Science Club which is run by teachers Eamon Curley on Moira McMahon on Wednesday evenings after school. Through the club, the idea of entering the Primary Science Fair at the Young Scientist came up. The school is currently working towards its second Green Flag, on the theme of energy, and the club had the idea of investigating how the school might reduce its carbon footprint and consequently, electricity costs.“After a lot of research we found a way to reduce our electricity costs by almost 40% per year by replacing our current lighting with more efficient lighting,” said sixth class pupil Dylan O’Neill.After this, the pupils went a step further and started investigating the possibility of getting rid of electricity costs completely. Science Alive

A RECORD number of schools have entered the BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition for 2010, proving that interest in science, technology, maths and engineering continues to grow throughout the country. Spread across the 32 counties, 329 schools have submitted a total of 1,588 projects for the exhibition, 520 of which will compete in the finals.Clare will be represented by 16 projects in the categories of Social and Behavioural Sciences, Chemical Physical and Mathematical Sciences and Biological and Ecological. Mary Immaculate Secondary School has nine entries, Meánscoil Na mBráithre has four entries with Kilrush Community School, Ennis Community College and Scoil Mhuire all having one entry each. Cuimhneamh to collect tales of Chicago’s older Irish

AN international initiative aimed at recording some of Clare’s elders who immigrated to America over the 20th century got underway in the last few days as part of a co-ordinated approach between Cuimhneamh an Chláir and NUI Galway.Cuimhneamh an Chláir, the newly established Clare Oral History and Folklore group, have partnered with the NUI Galway and the Irish Immigrant Support Group in Chicago, to conduct a pilot oral history initiative with some Clare natives who left the Banner County many years ago.The initiative will be run over the course of four months and will see two postgraduate students from NUI Galway’s Social Care Programme meeting with and interviewing a number of elderly Clare people in Chicago.  The students have been trained by Cuimhneamh an Chláir and the recordings will be added to the Clare group’s increasing archives of the memories of Clare in bygone days.   Tomás Mac Conmara, project co-ordintaor with Cuimhneamh an Chláir, explained how early in 2009, the …

Charity rugby game for Milford Hospice

The organisers of a charity rugby game in Sixmilebridge on St Stephen’s Day hope to raise over €2,000 for Milford Care Centre, Limerick.Casey’s Angels, which comprised patrons of Casey’s Bar, Sixmilebridge, defeated Den’s Devils, which included friends of Danny Gallagher, who runs the O2 mobile phone shop in Shannon, 9-3 after a very entertaining game in the School Field, Sixmilebridge.Over €1,700 has already been collected from sponsorship cards and the organisers are very hopeful of reaching their target of over €2,000.Refereed by Paddy Mulready, the match was the brainwave of Dave Fielding and Joe Hogan to raise money for Milford Hospice. A video of the game was shown in Casey’s Pub later that evening and also featured on YouTube.Sixmilebridge publican Anne Casey said she was delighted with the response to what proved to be a great fun event.“It was a great idea and it was great to raise so much money for a good cause. Three good fairies gathered to bestow special gifts on the newborn. If I had such powers, I’m not sure which gift I’d choose to give. Ideally, I wish I could present everyone with a set of skills to cope with “life, love and the whole damn thing”.How to decide the order of importance in which I’d place such talents?
