Camogie scholarships for NUIG Clare duo

NUI Galway camogie club received a timely boost this week as they prepare to compete in, as well as host, the 2011 Ashbourne Cup, as two of their star players were awarded camogie association scholarships.

Two Clare players, Sixmilebridge’s Chloë Morey and Crusheen’s Anne Marie McMahon received the scholarships. Both come from well-known hurling families in Sixmilebridge and Crusheen and both have lined out with their clubs and county with distinction.
Chloë has played for the Clare senior team and for the Clare minor side for the last four seasons and is underage for minor once more in 2011. She has won many honours with Sixmilebridge and joined NUI Galway this year. Her brother, Caimin, who is a final year engineering student in NUI Galway, was an integral part of the successful Fitzgibbon Cup side last season.
Anne Marie is a second-year student in NUI Galway and after a bright fresher year in which she made the Ashbourne Cup side with a number of sterling performances, is this year’s vice-captain. She commenced her playing career with Kilnamona, winning all club honours in Clare, before Crusheen formed their own club at the start of 2009 and contested the junior final in only their second season in 2010. Anne Marie, like Chloë, has played all levels for Clare and is a current member of the county senior side. Anne Marie’s brother, Brendan, also played in the Fitzgibbon Cup for NUI Galway earlier in the decade and continues to line out with Crusheen, captaining them to junior league and championship honours in 2010.
NUIG Gaelic Games officer, Michael O’Connor congratulated both students on their success and said, “It is a rare honour for NUI Galway to have two camogie scholarships but it is not a surprise, considering the abilities and dedication of both players in question”.
He continued, “As NUI Galway are once more hosting the Ashbourne Cup and with one of the largest influx of new talent in recent years, hopes are high of doing well in the event”.
Already this season, under the management of Richard McNicholas and Tipperary hurler and current student Seamus Hennessy, the fresher side has captured the fresher title with Killanena’s Evelyn Glynn and ChloëMorey to the fore.
In the opening round of the Ashbourne Cup played in late November, NUI Galway scored a 2-19 to 2-6 win over DIT with McMahon, Morey, Glynn and Kilmaley’s Shónagh Enright in the starting line-up.
