Broadford closures on the agenda at meeting

The recent temporary closure of Broadford Post Office and the permanent closure of the local garda station look set to generate some heated discussion at a local meeting in the new year.
Angered by the shock closure of Broadford Garda Station, a meeting of the community alert group will be held on January 4.
It is expected the Broadford Action Group, which is lobbying for the re-opening of the local post office, will also voice its concerns at this meeting if An Post management hasn’t provided a definite date for the return of postal services to the village.
Group chairman P J Mason confirmed he had another brief discussion with An Post officials earlier this week, who were still unable to state when the post office would return.
Broadford Post Office closed its doors on Friday, November 10 last when customers were advised to conduct their usual business at Tulla Post Office.
Mr Mason pledged the group will use the community alert meeting to discuss the postal issue if An Post hasn’t responded in the meantime with a re-opening date.
He told The Clare Champion that An Post officials acknowledged the great inconvenience the closure is causing for some and that the lack of a post office is causing a problem in the locality.
The group has written to Communications Minister Pat Rabbitte asking him to make representations to An Post to fast-track the re-opening of the post office.
According to a copy of the letter obtained by The Clare Champion, the group expressed concern about the cost and upset for families, elderly people, businesses and the general public since the post office closed for the first time since 1831.
“There is a serious opportunity for the business to grow and expand to include all banking facilities. This will be helped by the closures of a number of bank branches in the region. Broadford is the centre and crossroads of East Clare, with a large catchment area, including Kilmore, Bridgetown, O’Briensbridge, Killuran, Ballymacdonnell, Bodyke, Truagh,  Sallybank, Kilbane Broadford and a substantial area of O’Callaghan’s.Mills,” the letter stated.
