Bike racing through Aillwee Cave

LAST year, more than 150 adventure racers took part in the inaugural two-day Caveman Race at Aillwee Cave. The demanding event consisted of two mountain running and two mountain biking stages, which saw participants race through the actual caves’ tunnels. The fast growing event, now in its second year, will take place over the weekend of October 13-14.

Again this year, participants will get the chance to run and bike through the cave itself and gain access to tracks and trails that are not usually open to the public. The highlight of the weekend will be the starting of running and biking time trials in the caves themselves. In order to preserve the beautiful landscape of the Burren, entries will be limited to the first 100 runners and first 100 cyclist entries.

The Caveman event, brainchild of Dolmen Sports, will consist of running on the Saturday and mountain biking on the Sunday. Competitors can enter the whole weekend for the overall prize with the accumulative time of two running stages and two mountain bike stages counting. Alternatively, there will be an option to enter the running on Saturday only or the mountain biking on Sunday only.

This unique event will also raise the profile of Muscular Dystrophy Ireland (MDI), a charity dedicated to providing support for members and their families who are affected with Muscular Dystrophy, a condition resulting in the weakening and wasting of the muscles.

Speaking about the event, Kim Warnock, fundraiser and PRO for MDI said, “We are delighted to be associated with this fun event again, MDI really appreciate people working their muscles for such a good cause.”
