Big entry for Greg Young Seniors Open

Greg Young (5), Kilrush, emerged as the winner of the Greg Young Seniors Open, a men’s singles stroke competition played over 36 holes at Lahinch on Friday (Castle Course) and Saturday (Championship Course). He returned 151 gross to win by a stroke from Pat Lucey (7), Ennis. Diarmuid Leonard (4), Castletroy was third on 152 and the same total was returned by Noel Pyne (2), Ennis, who was fourth.

Tom Saunders (6), Ennis, won the nett with 142 from Denis Creedon (8), Lahinch, on 144 and Eddie Costelloe (6), Rathbane, on 146.
Dermot Morris, Limerick, had the best gross on Friday with 72 while Noel Phelan, Carlow, had the best nett on Friday with 68.
On Saturday, the best gross was returned by Paul O’Brien, Lahinch, with 78 while Dave Sheedy, Lahinch, had the best nett with 71.
Other prizewinners were Seamus Troy, Thurles, (best nett over 50 years) with 146, Frank McGowan, Athlone, (best nett over 60 years) with 147 and Gerry Gough, Lahinch, (best nett over 70 years).
In the open singles at Lahinch last Thursday, Michael Power (6) from Cork was the winner with 36 points from Kevin McGrath (5), Lahinch, on 33 and Declan Dunne (11), Balbriggan, on 33.
Ronan Cooney (3) and Thomas Neenan (1) were the winners of the fourball competition on the Castle Course on Saturday with 44 points.
Sunday’s singles Stableford turkey competition was won by Darragh McDermott (15) with 38 points from Paddy Coleman (8) on 36, Murt McMahon (8) on 36 and Stephen Hennessy (5) on 35.

Shannon
Last Wednesday’s open singles saw ex-officio captain, Michael O’Connor, lead the rest of the field on a merry dance when he returned a one-over par round for 45 points. Michael covered the front nine in one under with a dropped shot at the second being offset by birdies at the sixth and eighth.
On his homeward journey he covered the first five holes in one under, with his birdie at the 11th. An untidy finish saw Michael drop shots at 15th, 16th and 18th, which was partly compensated by his fourth birdie of the day at the 17th.
In the end, he had three points to spare from Kevin Hehir and Tom McMahon, both on 42 points, with Kevin edging out Tom on the back nine.
Highlight of Kevin’s round was a birdie at the 17th. Tom recorded three birdies at the first, eighth and 14th. The gross was captured by Darren Keane with 33 points.
The men’s fourball over the weekend saw Liam Hogan and Mal Simpson pip Colm O’Flynn and Jim McNamara by virtue of a better back nine, both returning 46 points. The back nine was also required to separate Eamon Fanneran and Louis Upton from Pat Hickey and Jim O’Flynn, both returning 45 points.
On the social scene, the 45 drive has recommenced on Thursday nights, starting at 9pm.
There will be a team-of-four competition this weekend, while the ladies will have a scotch foursomes competition.

Spanish Point
Turkey competitions got underway in the men’s section at Spanish Point last weekend and a full schedule of all fixtures until December is available in the clubhouse.
There was a big entry at the weekend with scoring high. The winner was John Meere with 40 points from Brian O’Loughlin on 39 and Ronan Flaherty on 36.
In the seniors open, Gerry Meade was the winner with 39 points from Patrick O’Boyle on 38 and Harry Crowe on 35.
The winners of the scramble were Fergal and Mervin Hehir and Roger Emmet with six under.
Last week’s fourball was won by Tom Mernagh and Brian O’Loughlin with 43 points from Brendan Hughes and Cian Kelly on 43.
This weekend there will be a three or four-man modified scramble.

Woodstock
Chris Power (12) won last week’s open singles at Woodstock with 40 points from Pat Barry (18) on 37 points.
In Sunday’s medal competition, Gerry O’Malley (2) won with 68 from Eugene Maher (11) on 71 and Gerry Kelly (7) on 71.  Scratch player Kieran Cunnane won the gross with 74.
This weekend’s competition will be a singles Stableford.

Dromoland
Damien Fahy was the winner of the weekend singles at Dromoland with 39 points from Mick O’Shea on 38 points and Frank Travers, also with 38 points. Sean Shanahan won the junior section with 38 points.
Next week’s competition will be the Fred O’Flanagan Memorial 18-hole v par competition.

Portumna
John Cunniffe (13) was the winner of the men’s 18-hole Stableford competition at Portumna on Sunday with 41 points. He had two to spare from Ken Killeen (16), with Pete Gibbs (12) in third spot, also with 39 points, followed by Brendan Madden (17) on 38 points. Sean Robinson (6) won the gross with 32 points.
In the ladies’ 18-hole Stableford competition, Mary Cahalan won with 40 points from Ena Moran on 38 points.
In the open three-ball competition the winners for September were John Hynes (18) Ronan Nevin (16) and Miriam Hynes (16) with 55 points from Pat G Kelly (18) Gerry Lynch (16) and Patsy Lynch (20) with 53 points.
Last week’s open competition was won by Donal Dooley (10) with 41 points from Pat Claffey (7), who had a similar score. Paul Twomey (19) was third with 40 points while John Harte (5) won the gross with 26 points.
Niall Concannon and Pauline McEvoy recently finished in first place at Royal Tara Golf Club in the PGA Team event. Both qualified from the club during the year.
Woodford Secondry School junior golfers were victorious in the schools provincial semi-final recently.  The team consisted of Cathal O’Byrne, Paul Porter, Andrew Moran and Shane McHugo.

Ennis
Elaine Whelan won the 18-hole ladies’ singles Stableford competition at Ennis with 40 points. She had four to spare from Mary McMahon with Kitty Quinn, also with 36 points, in third spot. Jenny Hennessy won the gross with 26 points.
Della Burns was the winner of the Ardagh Cup at Ennis recently.

East Clare
The men’s 18-hole singles winner was Mike Noonan, with Seán Walsh second and Tom Millea third.  In the vice-captain (Siobhán Shanahan) prize to ladies, Ann McInerney was the winner, followed by Siobhán Shannon with Catherine Minogue third.
In the ladies’ seniors, Connie McKenna was followed home by Bess Fennessy and Mary Bulger.
Sixteen clubs took part in last Friday’s Careerwise team-of-three tournament. The winners were Gerry Broderick, PJ Healy and James Fahy from Gort.
The winter league starts shortly and names are being taken.

Clare-Galway Seniors Winter League
Ninety-five seniors played in the opening round of the Clare-Galway Seniors Winter League over 16 holes at Woodstock last Sunday. The winner was Kevin Mulkerrins (Gort) with 40 points, followed by team-mate Gerry Cooney on 37 points, while Michael Butler (Ennis) was third on 35 points.
Richard Pyne (Woodstock) won the gross on 27 points.

Gort
In the men’s 18-hole stroke from last Saturday and Sunday, Pat Flanagan won on a score of 63, with Aidan O’Donnell second on 70, with Tristan O’Connor third on 70 points. The gross was won by Colman Cooney on 76.
In the open 18-hole singles Stableford, John Walsh (Loughrea) won on 37 points from Tommy Madden on 35 points with Eddie Leen (Ennis) third also on 35 points.
The men’s October 18-hole fourball will be held this Saturday and Sunday, with the open 18-hole singles Stableford on Monday.
In the ladies’ 18-hole singles Stableford, Maura Hanrahan won on 35 points with Ger Lynch second on 34 points.
Ann Kerins won the 18-hole singles Stableford open last Monday on 37 points.
The 18-holes singles Stableford will be held on Sunday and Tuesday next, with the Hallowe’en Surprise on Tuesday, October 26.

Ennis Golf Club ladies
In the18-hole singles competition, Elaine Whelan was first (40), second was Mary McMahon (36), the gross was won by Jenny Hennessy (26), while Kitty Quinn (36) was third.
The Ardagh Cup winner was Della Burns.

Pitch and Putt
At the Clare Road venue last Sunday the foursomes competition was won by Tommy Kelly and Martin Brown. Gross went to Marty Fawl and Denis McElligott.
