Battling it out for the seniors’ league title


THE penultimate round of the Clare/Galway Winter Seniors’ League took place in Ennis on Friday last and attracted a big turnout.
Gort’s Pat Fahy was the winner on the day with 37 points from his clubmate, Pat Craddock, who had a similar score. Sean O’Gorman, from Ennis, also with 37 points, was in third spot followed by another Ennis member, Michael Torpey, who also scored 37 points. Tom Pender, Ennis was fifth with 36 points followed by Michael O’Grady, Gort, with 36 points, Paul Higgins, Ennis, with 36 points, Michael Culliney, Ennis, with 36 points, Jimmy McNamara, Ennis, with 36 points and Finbarr Gantley, Gort, with 34 points.
Ennis member, Noel Pyne, won the gross with 31 points.
The final round of the league will be held in Woodstock next Wednesday. Ennis and Gort are currently battling it out for the overall title.

Woodstock

IN the weekly seniors’ competition at Woodstock, the winners of the team-of-three outing were Bobby Burke, Jim McMahon and Tom McKaigney with 56 gross.
Last Tuesday’s 14-hole competition for the ladies was won by Fran Feighery with 29 points.
The first 18-hole competition of the year was won by Joan Barrett on Sunday with 34 points from Kathleen McEnery with 30 points.
There will be a similar competition this Sunday from 12 noon with the draw for partners taking place at 11.50am.
The men’s singles competition on St Patrick’s Day was won by Pat Keane (11) with 45 points.
After Round 4 of the winter league, James Carmody’s team leads with 214 points from Nick Germaine on 213, John O’Connor on 212 and Adrian Kearney on 209.
In the singles on Sunday, John O’Connor (12) was the winner with 44 points from Tony Nugent (4), who had a similar score.
Round 5 in the league will take place this weekend.

Kilrush

THE St Patrick’s Day mixed scramble at Kilrush was won by the team comprising Jim Young, Brendan Carrig, Pat Donnellan and Gay Looney.
In second place were Tom Cleary, Pat Shannon, Tony McMahon and Annie Gallagher and they were followed by Declan O’Donovan, Jonathan Rockett, Mary Young and Anne Coote.
In the spring league play-off, played on Sunday, the winners in group one with 80 points were Ollie, Brendan and Mary McNamara, Tom Prenderville and John McNelius from Tom O’Dea, John Robinson, Murt Collins, Margaret Griffin, Ailish Lorigan and Agnes Shannon with 77 points. In third spot with 76 points were Tony and Finbarr McMahon, Michael Coghlan, Tom Coffey and Stephanie Roughan.
First place in group two with 72 points were Michael Studdard, Sean Lyons, Tom Smyth, Mary Lyons and Annie Gallagher followed by Eamon and Liz Rigney, Billy and Anne Coen and John Breslin with 69 points.
Prizewinners in the weekly singles competition were Tom Coffey, Michael Hogan, Kieran Lillis, Tom Prenderville, Agnes Shannon, Stephanie Roughan, Anne Coen, Mary Bolton and Mary Young.

Ennis

LAST week’s ladies’ 18-hole singles competition at Ennis was won by Maureen Moloney with 40 points from Betty O’Reilly with 35 points and Rita O’Brien, also with 35 points. The gross was won by Pamela Murphy with 33 points.
The St Patricks Day ladies’ team-of-three competition was won with 66 points by Maura McNicholas, Valerie Hassett and Pamela Murphy.

Dromoland
IN the ladies’ team-of-three competition at Dromoland on Saturday, the winners were Mairéad Bergin, Joan Ryan and Beata Porter from Maire McMahon, Maureen McKeogh and Mary O’Donnell.
The captains (Willie Fitzgerald and Sandy Smyth) drove into office on Sunday and this was followed by a nine-hole scramble, the winners of which were Willie Fitzgerald, Sandy Smyth and Katrina O’Neill from Liam Hayes, Frank Travers and Sheila Ryan. In third place were Mark Hogan, Sean Shanahan and Julie Newman followed by Dermot O’Hanlon, Yvonne Shanahan and Sheila Kent.
In the winter league, the winners were Mick O’Shea, Con Ryan, Barry Moloney, Sean Shanahan and Frank Travers from Aidan O’Mahoney, Edmond Moriarty, Dermot and Hugh O’Neill and Brian Kelly with third spot filled by Tony Kelly, Pat Reale, Ger Copley, Aaron Duggan and Gordon Flewett. The individual winner was Joe Cronin.
In the St Patrick’s Day Stableford competition, the winner was Nicky Duggan from Tony Burns while Aidan O’Mahoney won the junior section. This week’s men’s competition will be an 18-hole singles Stableford.

East Clare

IN the men’s singles Stableford competition at East Clare last week, Stephen Moloney (12) was the winner with 48 points from Val Donnellan (10) on 42. In the men’s foursomes qualifier, Pat McNamara (14) and John Stack (20) won with 40 points from John Duffy (16) and Martin Bren (14) with 39 points.
The winners of the men’s seniors’ competition last week were Liam Skelly, Richard Keating and John Stack with 87 points from Paddy O’Connor, Finbarr Ryan and John Brett with a similar score. John Torpey, Conor Tuohy and Noel Enright were third with 86 points.
In the ladies’ 18-hole singles, Mary Rodgers was the winner with 38 points from Peggy Ryan on 34 and Siobhán Shanahan on 34.
In the ladies’ waltz competition, Catherine Murphy, Mary Collins and Nanch Starr won from Margaret McNamara, Brigid Minogue and Hilda McHugh.
In the ladies’ seniors’ competition, Marie Moloney, Mary Collins and Catherine Murphy won from Bess Fennessy, Bernie Bohan and Georgina Wright.
The men’s singles matchplay qualifier will take place this weekend, while the ladies’ section will have a golfer-of-the-year competition.

Shannon

THE ladies’ 15-hole singles v par competition at Shannon saw Pauline Kilmartin capture the honours with 5-up. In second place was new member, Sandra McNamara, on 4-up and she was followed by Jean Murphy-Wright with 3-up.
Scoring was remarkable in the men’s fourball on St Patrick’s Day with 48 points required to finish amongst the prizewinners. All three winners each returned 48 points with Dermot Egan and Eamon Kirwan edging out Pat Griffin and Denis Bartley by virtue of a better back nine. They, in turn, edged out Colm O’Flynn and Brendan Hughes on the back three.
The first golfer-of-the-year competition, the Tradaree Cup, saw Eddie Clohessy capture the honours with 67 nett. Eddie turned in seven over but an excellent back nine of three over, highlighted by a birdie at the 18th, was sufficient to give him victory from Kevin Hehir Jnr on 68 nett. In third place was Eamon Fanneran on 69 nett while the gross was won by Jason O’Donnell with 74.
This weekend, the March men’s medal will be played for while the ladies will have an 18-hole stroke competition.

Spanish Point

WITH the combination of fine weather and the national bank holiday, the course at Spanish Point was very busy last week and all competitions were well supported. In the seniors’ open, Gerry Meade (16) was the winner with 39 points from John Meere (15) with 35 points.
The St Patrick’s Day nine-hole re-entry competition was won by Bernie O’Halloron (20) with 21 points.
Ross Burke (21) won the Friday open with 43 points from Joe O’Rourke (22) with 40 points and John Meere (15) with 39 points.
In the weekend four-ball, Cathal Whelan (9) and Conor Egan (13) won with 43 points from Tom Mernagh (5) and Brian O’Loughlin (10) with 42 points.
There will be an open three-ball modified scramble this Saturday and Sunday and a timesheet is available in the clubhouse.
The winner of the recent 18-hole ladies’ competition at Spanish Point was Breda Murphy with 41 points, from Kathleen Twomey with 35 points and Tanya Carroll with 29 points. A three-ball scramble competition will take place on Sunday.
There are still some places available for the trip to Kinsale on Saturday week, April 2 for the Hillery-Lynch Shield clash with Ringenane Golf Club.

Lahinch

LAST week’s ladies’ singles stroke monthly medal competition at Lahinch was won by Jenny Cagney (14) with 73 nett from Anna Glynn (17) on 75 and Marjorie Aherne (12) with 77.
The St Patrick’s Day men’s aggregate four-ball was won by Mark (scratch) and Paul Ryan (6) with 76 points from Dan O’Donovan (10) and Aidan O’Driscoll (11) with 73 points. In third spot with 67 points were Shane Duggan (10) and Frank Keane (12).
In a similar competition for the ladies, Gráinne Hennessy (15) and Georgina Condon (15) were the winners with 69 points from Valerie Shannon (7) and Connie Fahy (19) with 66 points.
In the men’s singles Stableford on Saturday, Shane Duggan (10) won with 35 points from Bart Gleeson (15) with 34 points and Dan O’Donovan (10) with 34 points.
Declan McInerney won the gross with 34 points.
In the Barrett Smith Cup, a ladies’ singles stroke competition on the Castle Course, Máire Hanrahan (24) won with 67 nett from Suzanne Cagney (34) on 70 nett and Teresa O’Brien (31) with 70 nett.
The scotch mixed foursomes on Sunday was won by Kevin (17) and Mary Mannion (17) with 36 points from Michael (8) and Gráinne Hennessy (15) with 33 points.
Pat O’Dwyer (18) won the men’s singles Stableford on Sunday with 38 points from Gerry Buckley (10) with a similar score. John Wall (10) was third with 37 points.

Portumna

IN the men’s 15-hole competition at Portumna on Sunday, the winners were Frank Kilkenny (category 0-10) with 34 points, Alan Hayes (category 11-14) with 34 points, Odhran Dunice (category 15-18) with 36 points, Alan Pardy (catgory 19 and over) with 30 points and PJ Hogan (seniors) with 38 points.
There will be an open 18-hole competition for men this Sunday.
In the seniors’ 14-hole singles last Wednesday, Martin Carty (23) was the winner with 31 points from Johnny Cowan (27) on 27 points with John Kennedy (17) in third spot with 25 points.
Mary McDonagh won the 14-hole Stableford and spring league with 32 points from Marie O’Reilly on 29 points followed by Hillary Molloy a similar score. The spring league was won by the team of MM Madden, Suzanne Corcoran, Mary Nevin, Audrey McGrath and Ann Fahy from Mary McElroy, Carmel Cunningham, Leanne Cassidy, Mary Conwell and Dagmar Ullrich-Werner. The best individual score of the league came from Mary McElroy with 162 points.

Kilkee

THE spring league week three winner at Kilkee was Mike Mullane with 34 points, while the winning team comprised Brian Harte, Liam Mullane, Ger Reidy, Tom Carry, Colm Clancy and Michael Daly with 125 points.

Gort

THE winners of the men’s four-ball Stableford competition at Gort at the weekend were David McAllen and Niall Gillane with 44 points from Tom Finneran and Finbar Gantly with 43 points. In third spot were Ollie Curtin and Michael Whealan with 42 points.
Mike Conway, Galway was the winner of the open singles on Monday with 42 points.
The subscription stakes, a golfer-of-the-year competition, will take place this weekend while the club team classic will begin on April 1.
The ladies spring league final took place last Sunday when the winners were 
Maura Hanrahan, Christina Daly, Ruth Naughton, Phil Mulkerrins and Regina Malone from Siobhán O’Connor, Sara Broderick, Mary Geoghegan, Helen McCormack and Ann Jordan. In third place were MF Coen, Carmel Murphy, Brenda Morrissey, Patricia Skehill and A Marie Cradock.
This weekend the ladies will have an 18-hole singles Stableford competition.

Doonbeg

DOONBEG Society held a scramble at Doonbeg links at the weekend when the winners were Timmy Killeen, Ita Mangan, Declan Conway and Seamus Griffin followed by Pat Hanrahan, Veron O’Connor, Pat O’Malley and Ger Ryan. Third spot was filled by Aoife O’Malley, Tom O’Dea, Kieran Golden and Pat Killeen.
The society’s next outing will be in early June to Kilrush.

Clare teachers

THE Clare Teachers’ Society will hold an outing to Loughrea this Saturday when the tee will be available from 11.30am to 1pm. The competition format will be singles Stableford.

Bridgetown

THE Bridgetown Society held their first outing for 2011 to Nenagh last Saturday when 20 members played.
The overall winner was Pat Fitzgerald with 37 points from Mike O’Brien on 36 and Ollie McCoy on 34. Tom O’Shaughnessy won category A with 33 points from Eoin O’Brien who had a similar score. The winner of category B was John Daly with 31 points from Paul Mason on 22, while category C was won by Pat Duggan with 28 points from Dave Barry on 23 points. Joe McArthur and Ryan Morris won the nines with Pat Duggan winning the prize for nearest the pin.
The next outing will be on April 16 when Ennis will be the venue and the tee will be available at 10am.

Clarecastle

CLARECASTLE Golf Society will hold its first outing of the year at Galway Bay Golf Club this Saturday. The first tee is reserved from 9.30am and a timesheet will operate on the day. Members can secure a preferred tee time by texting 086 3246015.

Sixmilebridge

SIXMILEBRIDGE Society will have its first outing of 2011 this Saturday when Ennis will be the venue. The tee is available from 11am to 12 noon.
Corofin
THE March outing of the Corofin Society will take place to Dromoland this Saturday where the tee is reserved from 9.30am. This outing was originally scheduled for Saturday last but had to be deferred.

Hermitage FC

HERMITAGE Soccer Club will hold a team-of-four classic  at Ennis on Saturday week, April 2. Details can be obtained from Mark Moloney at 086 8888282.

Pitch and putt

NOEL Cuddihy was the overall winner in the Mickey Kerin Shield at the Clare Road Pitch and Putt Club on Sunday. Gareth Kerin was in second place while Marty Fawl won the gross.
The competition on this Sunday will be the bronze trophies.
