Annual captains’ dinner for Ennis Golf Club


THE captains’ (Padraig Ryan and Ann Kelly) dinner will be held in the clubhouse on Saturday night. During the evening, the vice-captains for 2011 will be named.

Ronnie Guinnane and Cathal O’Neill were the winners of the turkey fourball at Ennis on Sunday with 50 points. Pat Garry and Tom Mulhern were in second place with a similar score and they were followed by Joe Colleran and Paudie Guerin with 49 points, Ronan Nalty and Niall Howard with 49 points, with fifth spot filled by Gerry and Damian Gilligan with 49 points.
The Ennis ladies Christmas spirit competition was won by Kitty McNicholas with 26 points from Deirdre Molyneaux on 24 and Pamela Murphy on 24.
In the ladies seniors’ competition, the winners were Kathleen Frehill, Claire Ruane and Ann Casey with 49, from Patricia O’Donnell, Oonagh Fitzpatrick and Mary Colton on 50, with third spot filled by Susan O’Brien, Ann Kehoe and Vera Griffin, also with 50.
The Friday open singles continues this week with a scramble on Saturday and the turkey fourball on Sunday.

Doonbeg
HUGH McNally was the winner of the singles competition last Sunday at Doonbeg with 39 points. He was followed in second place by Liam Hayes on 36 points, while Seanie Honan was third with a similar score.
There will be another singles competition on Sunday with the tee available between 9am and 10.12am.
The four-ball matchplay is at the semi-final stages and the final will be played at the end of the month.

Portumna
THE weekend’s singles competition at Portumna attracted a good entry with Shane McHugo (5) winning the 0-10 category with 31 points. Other winners were Ian Davis (12) with 34 points in the 11 to 14 handicap category, Dave Burnett (17) in the 15-18 handicap category, John Lynch (19) in the 19 and over category with 31 points and Dan Hogan (11) with 36 points in the seniors section.
Last Thursday, Suzanne Corcoran became chairperson of the Western District of the ILGU at the AGM, which was held in Knock. This is the first time Portumna Golf Club has had a chairperson of the district. Suzanne has represented Portumna Golf Club at every level.
The annual Final Fling outing prior to the Christmas rush will be on Sunday, December 5 at Portumna. The gents Christmas hampers will be played for on that day also.
The AGM of the parent committee will be held on Tuesday, December 14 in the clubhouse at 8pm. The incoming lady captain for 2011 is Lillian Austin and Ina Moran is her vice-captain.
The men’s captain for 2011 is Christy O’Rourke with Frank Ryan as his vice-captain. John Harte is the club president for the coming year.

Dromoland
HUGH O’Neill was the winner of the winter hamper competition at Dromoland at the weekend with 42 points. He had one to spare over Michael Flannery and they were followed by Seamus Cusack and Brian Hickey on 41, Pat Reale on 40, Tom Moloney, Ray O’Neill, Phillip Ryan and John O’Shaughnessy on 39 and Con Ryan on 37. The junior winner was Jason O’Leary with 38 points.
The winners of Dromoland scotch foursomes were Nicky Duggan and David Casey, who beat Alan and Damian Ryan.
Prize-giving for both the hamper and scotch foursomes competitions will be held on Sunday evening at 6pm sharp.
This weekend, there will be a turkey singles Stableford competiton.

Shannon
THE first turkey singles competition of the year saw Liam Walshe victorious with 38 points for 15 holes. Liam had one to spare from Eugene Donaghy. Denis Bartley was third, courtesy of a better back six from James Bullman, both returning 36 points. The gross was captured by Ed Hickey with 32 points.
With the Wednesday open singles now finished for the season, the club will be running a members’ 15-hole turkey singles every Wednesday. Last Wednesday, Darren Keane captured the spoils with 36 points. John O’Connor was second with 35 points, with Padraig Cahillane third with 33 points.
The weekend turkey singles saw Maurice Murphy victorious with 40 points. Former Antrim hurling goalkeeper, Jim Corr was second with 39 points, while John Gubbins was third with 38 points. The gross was won by Paul O’Neill with 33 points.
On Sunday, the mixed hamper saw husband and wife Jody and Mary O’Connor capture the hampers with 45 points. General manager, Michael Corry and his wife Connie were second with 43 points, followed by Tim Danagher and Linda Quinn with 42 points.. The gross was won by Michael O’Connor and Rose Doyle with 32 points.
Paschal Regan and Mary O’Brien were elected captains for 2011 at their respective men’s and ladies’ annual meetings during the week.
On the social side, the 45 drive continues each Thursday night, commencing at 9pm. The club’s children’s Christmas party will take place on Sunday, December 19 and names of children attending may be given to the office.
This weekend, the men’s 18-hole singles hamper will be the competition.

Lahinch
SHANE Duggan (9) and Frank Keane (12) were the winners of the men’s scotch foursomes Stableford competition played on the championship course at Lahinch on Saturday. They had a score of 37 points.
In the mixed scotch foursomes on the same day, Gerry (9) and Yvonne Keohane (18) were winners with 40 points.
Sunday’s singles Stableford competition winner was Ger Wall (9) with 41 points from Gerry Pierse (7) on 40 points, Dan O’Donovan (10) with 40 points and Gearóid Williams (13) with 39 points.
Sunday’s mixed foursomes Stableford winners were Barbara (16) and Eamonn Foley (20) with 45 points from Marjorie Ahern (12) and Martin Scales (15), who had 44 points.
In the ladies’ turkey singles v par competition on Monday, Jenny Cagney (15) was the winner with two up from Maria Nolan (28), who had a score of one up.

East Clare
THERE was an excellent attendance for the captains’ dinner held in the clubhouse on Saturday night. The evening had a country and western theme, which added to the entertainment on an evening when president, Kevin Mannion and captains, Mary Beatty and Sean Aherne were acknowledged for their efforts during the year. The function was organised by the vice-captains, Siobhán Shanahan and William O’Brien.
During the evening, Mary Hogan and Caimin Condren were presented with the Olive Fahy Memorial Mixed Matchplay Cup.
Teams have now been finalised for the Winter League and arrangements are currently being made for the fourball competition.
The winners of the ladies’ seniors’ competition last week were Frances Gaffney, Mary Bugler and Mary Joe Minogue from Margaret O’Grady, Phil Burke and Anna McGillicuddy, with third spot filled by Sue Casey, Bridget Minogue and Pat Williams.
Connie McKenna won the ladies’ 14-hole singles competition from Mary Brennan, while the men’s singles winner was Tony McMahon with 43 points from Pat McKenna on 38 points.
Mass for deceased members will take place in the clubhouse next Monday evening at 7.30pm.

Spanish Point
DESPITE the heavy rain of the past few weeks, the course at Spanish Point remains very dry with the greens firm and quick.
Tuesday’s senior open continues to be well supported and last week’s winner was Gerry Meade with 33 points, with David Fitzgerald second with 30 points.
In the turkey singles at the weekend, Brian O’Loughlin was the winner with 39 points from Gerry Gallagher on 38 and Harry Crowe on 38.
There will be a team scramble this weekend and a timesheet is in operation.
The annual meeting of the parent club will be held on December 4 and nominations and motions must be submitted by this Saturday.

Gort
THIS week’s Monday open singles at Gort was won by Gerry Bond (Loughrea) with 42 points from Joe Geoghegan on 32 and Brendan Harte on 31.
In the weekend’s singles, John Rodgers was the winner with 42 points from Michael Moroney on 41, Anthony Thompson on 41 and Joe Geoghegan on 40.
There will be a men’s singles Stableford competition this weekend, while the weekly open singles will continue on Monday.
In the recent ladies’ mini-hampers competition, a 13-hole singles event, Ruth Naughton was the winner with 29 points from Ger Lynch on a similar score. Helen McCormack was third on 26 points.
The ladies’ Christmas cracker competition continues until December 7, while there will be another mini-hamper competition over 13 holes this weekend.

Woodstock
THE weekend’s 14-hole turkey competition for ladies was won by Nancy Burke with 29 points, while the previous week’s winner was Joan Barrett with 30 points.
A nine-hole singles competition continues weekly for the month, while there will be a 14-hole turkey competition on Sundays.
In the men’s section, Brian Mulcahy (16) was the winner with 39 points from John Daly (14) on 36 points, with Ollie McNamara (12) in third spot also with 36 points. The Christmas hamper will be the competition this weekend.
The annual general meeting of the ladies section will be held in the clubhouse on Sunday, December 5 at 5.30pm. The meeting will be followed by a function in the Old Ground Hotel, when the presentation of the hampers will take place.
The club AGM will be on the December 14 in the clubhouse at 8pm.

Pitch and putt

THE winner of the Stableford competition at the Clare Road pitch and putt club last Sunday was Tommy Kelly from Tony Clancy.
The annual general meeting of the Clare Road Club will take place on Sunday, November 28 at 9pm.
The Cill na Mona Club’s annual general meeting will be held on Thursday, November 25, at the Copper Jug in Ennis at 8pm.
