THE County Clare Agricultural Show was held on Sunday and attracted more entries across all sections than in recent years.

Minister for Agriculture, Simon Coveney, attended the show and addressed the farmers present. Minister Coveney visited several sections and paid tribute to the organising committee for the high standard of the show.

There were good entries in the grand prix competition, which was won by Seamus Hayes.
The Champion Young Horse of the Show was shown by John Leahy, Cregg, Lahinch, to claim the De Valera Cup.

The Pat and Eileen Fitzgerald Yearling Colt Felding All – Ireland Championship was won by Thomas Foley, Kildysart.

The Champion Series final, which the show hosted, was won by John Roche from Foulksmills, County Wexford, who also bred the animal.

Donkey classes were busy  and the Champion Donkey was owned by Sadbh O’Meara, Ennistymon.
The dog show attracted a lot of interest. The best dog in show was owned by Maeve Gleeson. In the horticulture section, the best in show prize was won by Tom and Margaret Scattery.

The pony-showing classes are always very busy, from the lead rein pony to the working hunter classes. Jane Hannigan from Kells, County Meath, was the winner of the Working Hunter Championship.

The Champion Charolais was won by Timothy Corriden; the Champion Simmental went to Peter O’Connell, Mallow; the Champion Hereford prize went to Trevor Dudley, Thurles and the prize for the Champion Limousin was won by Donal Maloney.

The show also featured the first Clare Garden Festival, which was held indoors, with speakers on all aspects of gardening, who encouraged people to grow their own and, as a result, eat healthily. The speakers included Ciarán Burke, Kitty Scully and Jo Newton.

The Best Dressed Lady Competition attracted many entries and the winner was Lily Bromwell from Limerick. Phil O’Halloran won the prize for the best accessories and Jamie McInerney from Newmarket-on-Fergus was the best-dressed man.

The Showgrounds will host the National Showjumping Championships on September 7, 8 and 9.
