€275,000 Incident Command Unit destined for Shannon base

CLARE could become the nerve centre for major emergencies and fire incidents in the region when a mobile Incident Command Unit, costing almost €275,000, is wheeled into the county this week.

Clare County Fire and Rescue Service will take delivery of the vehicle, a command and control office on wheels that accommodates a meeting room and communications area, fitted with satellite and 3G, on Friday.
This unit will provide the local fire service with the most up-to-date equipment and technology to implement the National Incident Command System, which provides for the safe, effective and efficient management and deployment of resources, both human and material, at all types of emergency incidents.
Built on a Volvo Truck Chassis, the unit will be based in Shannon Town Fire Station and will be available not only for Clare but also for the adjoining authorities of Limerick City and County and North Tipperary.
It will be used in the event of large fire incidents or major emergencies to provide a command support role primarily to the local authority emergency services.
The unit was fully financed by the Department of Environment, Community and Local Government to the sum of €273,894.50.
Initially, Clare County Council was engaged to procure a number of these for different areas in the country. However, due to a reduction in finances, two were designed and procured, one for Clare and the other for Cork County.
While a number of counties have vehicles for similar purposes, these are the most advanced in the fire service in Ireland.
