THE Jack Downes Appeal, which was launched in December 2012, has raised €25,000 to help out the Kilrush teenager with his treatment for Transverse Myelitis.

His family have acknowledged the people of Kilrush and West Clare, who have supported the various fundraisers.

“The total raised for Jack was €25,000 and it has helped him in so many ways. It helped with renovations at his home, which included converting part of his home for his bedroom and wetroom that had to be installed and made wheelchair accessible,” Jack’s mother, Patricia, said.

A new wheelchair has been purchased for Jack, while money also went towards ongoing trips from Kilrush to Dublin, Limerick and Galway, where Jack attends specialists. Expenses also included MRI scans and accommodation, where necessary.

At present, Jack is awaiting spinal surgery, which will take place in Temple Street Children’s Hospital, Dublin. While preparing for surgery Jack is undergoing private rehabilitation physiotherapy twice a week in The First Step Rehabilitation Centre, Limerick.

“It has been 11 months since the sudden onset of Jacks illness. He still has a long road ahead of him and the prognosis remains unknown.

“However, the level of independence Jack has gained being able to get around his home independently and the level of care he is receiving is all thanks to the people that supported him,” Patricia added.

Until early August 2012, Jack was a normal, happy 14-year-old teenager, who enjoyed life at home, school and being with his friends.

He was an excellent swimmer and played soccer for Moneypoint AFC. He has been an insulin-dependent diabetic since he was two years old but that never held him back, as his condition was under control and was just part of his everyday life.

He was then diagnosed with Transverse Myelitis, which has left him using a wheelchair and receiving intense medication.
