THERE was an entry of 140 competitors for the 10 mile and four mile fun run and walk, which started and finished at the Auburn Lodge Hotel.

Two athletes made an early break, Michael Shannon (St John’s) and Willie Devitt (Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare) and they went through the mile mark in 5.15.

Thomas Grimes (Limerick), Oliver McInerney (Ennis Tri Club) and Carl Lyons (Limerick) were closing in on the leaders and changes had taken place when some athletes took the wrong route.

The leader, Michael Shannon, was well clear at the halfway, going through the five mile mark in 26.55. He went well clear of the big field over the second half to win comfortably in 53.25.

Oliver McInerney was second in 61.38 and Carl Lyons was a very good third in 61.47, followed by Michael Kelly (Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare) in 62.46.

The race was organised by Tracy Guilfoyle (Kilnaboy AC) and from the start, Sharon Rynne (Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare) set out with the leading men and was running in the top ten for the first three miles, with the rest of field well strung out.

Tracy Guilfoyle, Aishling Power, Helen O’Hanlon (both Ennis Track) along with Loretto Duggan (Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare) were working well together. Rynne was a 200m clear at the halfway point and she had opened up almost two minutes on Guilfoyle, with Power right on her shoulder. Rynne worked very hard in the second half to finish with a personal best time of 65.00, a full three minutes ahead of Guilfoyle (69.18) and Power (69.25).

Veronica Colleran (Ennis Track) dominated the four mile race from start to finish beating all to cross the finishing line in 26.31, with outstanding master athlete Rita Kierce (St Mary’s) second with a time of 30.00, followed by Hilda O’Connor (Ennis Track) in 33.10.

Joe Colleran (Crusheen), brother of Veronica, dominated the men’s four mile race to take the title in 27.43, from Guillaume Beugnon (Ennis) in 30.03 and Michael Naughton (Ennis) in 30.43.
