In the U-11 competition, it was Clare’s U-11 team that took the honours beating a talented Kerry side.
From the throw-in, it was clear the battle would be between the physically stronger Kerry side and the incessant running and teamwork of the Clare girls. A great work ethic garnered Clare three early scores (1-2) in the first quarter.
Kerry piled on the pressure and had a great early goal chance well-saved by the Clare keeper, Michelle Downes. A quick pass to Sarah Brown, who worked the ball up the right wing to Cliona Blake, kicked long to the corner to speed merchant Caoimhe Harvey. Caoimhe played a neat one two with Alex Potter who passed to Aisling Meaney to bury the ball in the Kerry net.
From the kick-out, team captain Katie Considine fielded to Chloe Moloney, who took a fine point from 30 yards into driving wind.
This was soon followed by a fine individual point from Chloe Scully to give Clare a five point lead.
Both sides exchanged points, with Aisling Meany and Sharon Egan tagging on the Clare scores, to leave it Clare 1-4, Kerry 0-2 at half time.
Kerry immediately began to dominate with the wind in the second half and had two clear goal chances. Aoibhe King at full-back started to command the area in front of the Clare goals and the siege was lifted when Chloe Moloney and Ronya Baumann worked a ball carefully up the field into the gale. Alex Potter latched on to the pass for Clare’s second goal.
Kerry’s reply was immediate and were awarded a penalty which they converted to keep the gap to five points. Clare’s superior fitness shone through in the final quarter with Shauna Melican, Sarah Browne, Áine Murphy and Bríd Foran adding points, as Kerry could only reply with two.
The management team comprised Marie Egan, Elaine Griffin, Lisa Harte and Gordon Drummy.
