Tulla welcomes an Unwanted concert

Minogue’s Bar in Tulla will play host to folk band Unwanted this Friday.
The music of the Atlantic Fringe is the source and inspiration for the much-acclaimed Sligo-based band, who will perform for the first time in Clare at the invitation of the Island Music Club.
Unwanted will be taking to the stage in Minogue’s in Tulla. The songs and tunes involve the combined traditions from Ireland to Appalachia and beyond and are the result of generations of movement and migration, of leave-taking and homecoming, back and forth across the ocean in an endless tide of cultural exchange.
Lyrics and melodies borrowed from one land wash ashore on another, only to return again later transformed, peopled with new characters and set in different modes.
Unwanted demonstrate a deep understanding and appreciation of the music of both the Old World and the New.
The three gifted musicians, Cathy Jordan, Rick Epping and Seamie O’Dowd, have created a seamless fusion of these elements, showing that the tradition of ‘Atlantic Fringe’ music continues today.
Roscommon-born Cathy Jordan, lead singer of the acclaimed group Dervish, moves effortlessly and with a soaring voice between sean-nós, Appalachian ballads and contemporary folksongs, lending rich accompaniment on bodhrán and tenor guitar.
She is accompanied by Sligo native Séamie O’Dowd, who plays guitar, fiddle and harmonica and who grew up steeped in the tradition of Sligo fiddling early on, expanding his repertoire to include the New World traditions. Today, he is as accomplished playing blues on slide guitar as he is playing jigs and reels. Seamie is well known both from his years with Dervish and from performing with the best of Irish traditional musicians such as piper Liam O’Flynn and accordionist Máirtín O’Connor.
Meanwhile, Rick Epping, who plays harmonica, concertina, banjo and jaw harp, is a native of California and has been moving back and forth between Ireland and the United States for over 40 years, playing the music of both lands since childhood.
Having played with musical greats such as Bill Monroe, Texas blues-man Mance Lipscomb and Irish accordionist Joe Cooley, Rick brings to the group a wealth of experience and authentic style.
Unwanted will present a magical transatlantic musical journey in Tulla on Friday. Doors open at 9pm and bookings can be made by contacting 086 8599957.
