Three Clare publicans settle tax liabilities

Three Clare publicans found themselves with combined bills in excess of €185,000 late last year after revenue audits revealed they had under-declared their income tax and VAT.
John Redmond of Circular Road, Kilkee had the highest of the Clare liabilities. He was found to owe in excess of €70,000 tax, more than €8,000 interest and €21,146 in penalties, totaling €100,000.
Fellow Kilkee publican Michael O’Mara of 12 O’Curry Street, was found to have under-declared tax to the value of €31,741. He was charged interest of more than €5,000 and penalties of €12,697, bringing his final settlement to €50,000.
Patrick Reddan with an address at Main Street, Killaloe was found to owe just under €24,000 in tax, less than €5,000 in interest and just over €7,175 in penalties. His total settlement was €39,962. 
A West Clare farmer was among more than 400 people fined or penalised between October 1 and December 31 last year. Kevin Sexton of Craggaknock in Mullagh was fined €6,000 as a result of two charges in relation to failing to lodge income tax returns.
During the same period five Clare people and companies were fined €2,500 each for misuse of marked mineral oil. Banner Steel Ltd, with an address at Clare Test Centre, Clarecastle; John Considine of Gowerlass, Kilrush; Martin Doherty of Glenview Close, Cappahard, Tulla Road, Ennis; retired farmer Patrick Hassett of Feighquin, Quin and farmer Michael Moroney were each hit with a €2,500 bill.
Two people with Clare addresses were fined for illegal selling of cigarettes.
Coal merchant Stephen McNamara of The Orchard, Ballycannon North, Meelick was fined €3,000 while Tomasz Rys, a cleaner from Cahercalla Estate, Kilrush Road, Ennis had to pay €2,500.
Lukasz Baranowski, a factory worker with an address at Green View, Cappahard, Tulla Road was fined for €3,000 for cigarette smuggling.
Published audit or investigation settlements completed by Revenue also contains details of penalty determinations made by the courts in respect of taxpayers who have deliberately or carelessly made incorrect returns in the final quarter of last year.
In the three-month period to 31 December, 2011, 90 taxpayers made settlements or had determinations totalling €14.96 million. Of the 90 published cases, 43 were for amounts exceeding €100,000; of which six exceeded €500,000 and one of that six exceeded €1,000,000.
