Three bundles of joy for Ennis couple

THEY say three’s a crowd but for Ennis husband and wife, David Mullin and Dymna Considine, they wouldn’t have it any other way.
The pair have just become the proud parents of not one, but three babies, who are currently being cared for in the Mid-Western Regional Maternity Hospital, Limerick.
The three are made up of identical twin boys, Tony James and Owen Hugh, and their little sister, Julie Ellen. The very little bundles of joy were born on March 7 at 34 weeks following a caesarean section. According to dad David they are all doing well and just need some extra care because they were born premature. Tony James weighed in at just 5lb 2oz, Owen Hugh at 4lb 13oz and Julie Ellen at 4lb 1oz.
David said, “When we went in for our scan the sonographer said there’s your baby, then the lady said she’d have another look and then she paused and said I think these are twins. We asked what she was looking at before and she said that’s the third one. We were just stunned. The sonographer told us that it was quite unusual.”
The three babies are David and Dymna’s only children, creating an instant family, where the proud mother’s childcare training is bound to come in handy. David has been scouring forecourts looking for a car that can accommodate three baby seats.
According to David, there are no multiple births in either family that they are aware of. “The pregnancy went ok but it was very difficult, particularly the last trimester. There were all the normal complications of pregnancy but more so. Dymna was carrying 14lbs of baby.
“It was a big relief for us to get to 30 weeks and when they gave us a date for the section, it gave us something to aim for. We were ticking the dates off the calendar.
“After the section, we were just relieved everything was ok. The possible complications for a triplet pregnancy, particularly with identical twins in it, is quite risky. We were just very relieved they hadn’t arrived before 30 weeks. To get to 34 is essentially full term for triplets. Dymna is tired but she is just delighted everything went well. It was a huge relief to get out of the operating theatre and just to see them all go down to the NICU,” said David.
The babies were immediately brought to the hospitals NICU, although Julie Ellen has since progressed to the high dependency unit. The couple didn’t get to hold or even touch the babies for some time after their birth.
However, according to David, “They are just so small but we were quite happy just to take photos of them. It didn’t worry us because we just knew they were there and they were safe.
“It wasn’t a shock for us to see them in the incubators because the nurses had arranged for us to go down to the NICU when it was quiet. They knew we’d have three down there. They showed us a baby that would be roughly the same size as ours would be and we just thought that baby was tiny.”
David and Dymna are now looking forward to welcoming their little ones home. “They will be in hospital for a while. They tell you not to expect them home before their due date but it just depends on each baby.
“There is no issue with them, it’s just that they were born early and need a little time. We just can’t wait until they are all home with us in Ennis,” David concluded.
