CHRISTMAS comes but once a year but in the lakeside community of Flagmount, young people get to celebrate it twice, as each year they create from scratch their own Christmas dinner, complete with turkey, Brussels sprouts and carols. The Lough Graney Youth Club members, from the ages of 12 to 20, design the three-course menu and prepare starters, cook a turkey and bake desserts for up to 25 people. As team leaders, Rebecca Smyth from Killanena, Louise O’Connell from Flagmount and Ella MacNamara from Caher, explain, this is the one time of the year when the whole group comes together. “We’ve been doing this for six or seven years, since we all went into secondary school,” Louise said. “It’s nice we all make the food together and we all have different parts we look after. FEBRUARY ushers in pantomime season in Sixmilebridge and this year members of the youth club hope to enthral audiences with their spin on the timeless classic, Pinocchio. Produced  by retired school teacher Frances Downes and co-produced by Suzanne Carmody and Ray Maxwell, audiences will be highly entertained as the cast put their own inimitable imprint on the show. There will be plenty of colourful costumes, singing, dancing and a great deal of audience participation. The show is choreographed by Lauren Kelly, with assistance from Tara Maxwell. The pantomime follows the story of Pinocchio, who is played by Tara Maxwell, and one of Pinocchio’s best-known characteristics is his nose. The wooden puppet is the creation of toymaker Antonio Gepetto, humorously portrayed by Stephen O’Dea, who is proud of his puppet but longs for a son to call his own. A Scariff youth group were busy last weekend, helping their local Tidy Towns group and residents of the Connaught Road housing estate, create their very own Garden of Eden. Members of My Time Foróige Junior Youth Club joined with the Connaught Road Residents Association, Scariff Tidy Towns and the Irish Seedsavers Association to plant apple trees and fruit bushes provided by the Garden of Eden Project. In September 2013, the new Foróige youth club came into existence, catering for 10 to 12-year-olds, and has been going from strength to strength in the past eight months. Youth club leader, Tracey Doyle outlined how the group came about and what they have been involved in. “I’m involved with the older group, Scariff Foróige Youth Club, and they will be 10 years next year.
