Irish Water and Clare County Council working to repair two incidences of rising main bursts at Kilkee which may impact Kilkee beach

IRISH Water has confirmed that it is working with Clare County Council to carry out repairs to two rising main bursts that may result in a wastewater discharge at Kilkee beach. Crews are working to repair the bursts as quickly and as safely as possible in adherence with current HSE and government Covid-19 advice. Tankers are on-site collecting wastewater to minimise any impact and discharges to the stream which leads to the beach. As a result of this incident, Clare County Council, in consultation with the HSE, has placed a bathing prohibition notice at Kilkee beach. It is likely that this notice will remain in place for a number of days pending the repairs of the wastewater and stormwater rising mains and the results of sampling of the bathing waters early next week, at which point the notice may be lifted. Information event on Clarecastle wastewater project

Irish Water is working in partnership with Clare County Council to end the discharge of untreated wastewater to the River Fergus from the Clarecastle area. At an information event on Wednesday, May 16, between 4pm and 8pm at the Old Clarecastle National School, Irish Water will unveil its plans to stop the discharge of the equivalent of 1,600 wheelie bins of untreated wastewater into the River Fergus every day from the public sewer network in Clarecastle. The plan includes the construction of a new rising main and upgrades to an existing pumping station to take wastewater from Clarecastle to the Clareabbey Wastewater Treatment Plant where it can be treated before being returned safely to the environment. “The provision of a new sewerage scheme for Clarecastle will help to improve water quality in the river, enhance of the area’s amenity value and will act as a platform for social and economic development.
