Clare nurse joins fight against childhood obesity

A CLARE woman has joined the fight against childhood obesity in Ireland and is urging the public to join the Irish Heart Foundation’s ‘Stop Targeting Kids’ drive. A growing trend in obesity levels in children, especially during Covid, has prompted Caitriona Lynch, from Sixmilebridge, to join the campaign. The ICU nurse in University Hospital Galway has a special interest in childhood obesity having just graduated from a Master’s of Science in Obesity from NUIG. “It is clear to me that junk food companies used the opportunity (during Covid) to keep their unhealthy products centre stage in children’s minds,” said Ms Lynch. “We need to break the junk food cycle to improve children’s health. I joined this campaign because I believe a ban on junk food marketing would be a game changer in tackling childhood obesity. “As an active campaigner, I’ve been in touch with the Advertising Standards Authority about irresponsible advertising by brands loved by young people as this marketing is …

Fatal road traffic incident in Kinvara

Gardaí are investigating a fatal road traffic incident following a car entering the sea at The Quay area of Kinvara at approximately 8pm last night. The driver and sole occupant of the car, a man in his late 70s, was taken to University Hospital Galway in a critical condition where he later passed away. Gardaí are appealing for anyone with information, particularly any motorists who may have been in The Quay area Kinvara between 7.45am and 8.15am who may have dash cam footage to come forward. ‘Microwave hearing’ cited in Cooraclare mast appeal

Angela Collins, Leitrim, Cree, has lodged an appeal against Clare County Council’s decision to grant Brian Sexton of Clare Broadband planning permission to retain a broadband mast at Cloonreddan, Cooraclare. As part of her appeal, Ms Collins submitted a letter from her consultant neurologist, Dr Harib Rahman of the Neurology Department, University Hospital Galway and Galway Clinic. “Angela Collins is suffering from microwave hearing, due to the location of the mast near her home,” Dr Rahman stated. Corofin planning consultant, Brendan McGrath submitted a number of planning documents on behalf of Ms Collins. In a submission to the appeals’ board, Mr McGrath stated that a visual inspection shows the mast is about 17 metres in height, 70% higher than the 10 metres stated in the retention application. “In my opinion, the documentation and information submitted are of poor quality. Fatal accident at Clarinbridge

Gardaí are investigating a two vehicle fatal road traffic collision that occurred on the N18 at Clarinbridge, County Galway at around 8.30am this morning (Monday). A woman in her 30’s was fatally injured when the car she was driving was involved in a collision with a truck. The sole occupant of the car, she was pronounced dead at the scene and her body removed to University Hospital Galway. This stretch of road is currently closed to facilitate an examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators. Traffic travelling south on the N18 is being asked to divert at Oranmore. Traffic travelling north is being diverted at Kilcolgan. Gardai are appealng for witnesses to this collision to contact Galway Garda Station on 091- 538000, The Garda Confidential Telephone Line 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.
