Gardai investigating following Shannon emergency landing

SHANNON Gardai are investigating following the emergency landing of a Turkish airlines flight at the airport, which was en route from Houston to Istanbul. Its being reported that a piece of paper with the word bomb written on it was found in one of the toilets. The flight landed at around 11am this morning and all on board were taken from the aircraft, which was parked in an isolated part of the airport. Last November a New York-Istanbul Turkish Airlines flight was the subject of a bomb hoax, while there was another such incident affecting a Turkish flight from Istanbul to Basel in April.

Air cargo service to take off

EXPORTERS to the US are to benefit from the launch of Ireland’s only direct all-cargo air service to North America at Shannon.  Turkish Airlines has been granted permission to carry air cargo from Shannon to Chicago, starting immediately. In March, Turkish Airlines began making refuelling stops at Shannon for the first time. They will now operate a weekly Shannon-Chicago service on Fridays, through their cargo subsidiary Turkish Cargo, boosting options for Irish exporters of all sizes. The service will be operated with Turkish Cargo’s modern fuel-efficient Airbus A330F aircraft, which is the world’s most modern mid-size freighter and is capable of transporting cargo from high-value consumer goods to industrial equipment to thoroughbred horses. After the separation from the DAA, Shannon Group identified the development of an air freight hub as a major opportunity, as much of Irish air cargo exports now travel by truck to Britain because of a lack of suitable direct flights. Turkey gains cargo rights at Shannon

A new bilateral agreement between Ireland and Turkey giving fifth freedom rights for air cargo services, will pave the way for airlines like Turkish Airlines to have pick up rights for cargo at Shannon. In announcing the initiative, chairman of the Oireachtas Foreign Affairs Committee, Pat Breen said this represents a significant boost, both for Shannon Airport and the wider region. “This is new era for bilateral relations between Turkish Airlines and Shannon Airport. Turkish Airlines, who already operate services into and out of Dublin, have recognised the potential for development at Shannon Airport. The airline has also been using Shannon Airport as a refuelling stop, which has been going very well. “I have been heavily involved with discussions with Turkish Airlines and has been working closely with the Shannon Airport Authorities and the Turkish Airlines.
