Fire at water treatment plant

Emergency services were called to deal with a fire at the Ennis Water Treatment Plant at Drumcliffe, serving the town and surrounding areas, this morning.The plant supplies drinking water to 30,000 customers in the area. Iris Water said the plant was immediately shut down in order to isolate electricity to the affected area but there was no impact on water supply as customers continued to be serviced from a reservoir attached to the plant. Full production recommenced at the plant at 6.30am and will be increased over the course of the day to replenish supplies at the reservoir.

Kinvara sewage plant ‘almost there’

THE long-awaited sewage treatment plant planned for Kinvara is a step closer to becoming a reality after Irish Water confirmed in the past week that it has begun the tendering process for it and also a new sewage pipe network to serve the town. For decades, locals and public representatives have campaigned for a sewage treatment plant for the village. On hearing the news, Fine Gael Deputy Ciarán Cannon said, “We’re almost there and I’m delighted to have received this news from Irish Water. The tendering process for both the new plant and new network has finally begun and Irish Water will be seeking tenders from a preferred panel of contractors, who have already been through a serious process of scrutiny to determine that they are capable of delivering on such a contract. “The people of Kinvara have been very patient while witnessing raw sewage pouring into their beautiful bay on a regular basis. Renewed calls for Shannon treatment plant upgrade

THE recent return of a “sewerage-type smell” in parts of Shannon has prompted renewed calls for the Government to fast-track the allocation of €22 million for a major upgrading of the “outdated” treatment plant. Councillor PJ Ryan said there are reports of a return of an intermittent “sewerage-type smell” in parts of Shannon, including the Tradaree and Cronan Gardens area. While this foul smell, which comes and goes, isn’t as bad as the pungent one that caused huge difficulties last year, Councillor Ryan explains it tends to get worse as the day gets hotter. Councillor Ryan believes foul odours will continue to cause a nuisance for businesses and residents until the sewerage treatment plant is properly upgraded. The Independent Councillor said the plant was never designed to take the current volumes of industrial and domestic waste. Councillor Gerry Flynn said he recently contacted the environment section of the council, following complaints from residents about a foul smell in the town. …
