Gardaí have confirmed that the Coastguard helicopter has recovered two teenagers who got into difficulty swimming in the quarry at Roslevan. The condition of the two boys is not yet known but they have both been taken to University Hospital Limerick. The incident occurred at approximately 4pm today. The Coastguard helicopter was deployed to deal with the situation and the two teenagers were retrieved from the water.  

THREE of the organisers of a teenage gambling awareness workshop in Ennis last week have told The Clare Champion that it is a significant issue for some young people. The gambling awareness seminar at Coláiste Muire involved interactive, peer-led workshops, which were designed by the school’s transition-year class. Among the guest speakers were Barry Grant, CEO of Problem Gambling Ireland, and addiction counsellor Justin Campbell. Shona Hale, Niamh McHugh and Rachel Kennedy, all of whom are transition-year students, played a central role in organising the event. As part of the project, Niamh interviewed a teenage girl with a gambling problem. “You wouldn’t think this girl had this problem. She gambled on online poker. She told us it all started with innocent slot machines. She was like, ‘if you know how to play it properly, you’re obviously going to win’. That’s what she said. TeenLine Ireland, the free, national listening service for teenagers has received approximately 25,000 calls and almost 26,000 texts since January last year, it has emerged. The service receives between 140 – 170 calls and texts a night, while an extra 1,100 calls and texts were received over Christmas. This is a significant increase on the numbers of teenagers contacting the service since 2015. “The number of calls and texts are continuously increasing which highlights the demand for the unique service TeenLine provides to teenagers and young adults across Ireland. It is hugely positive to see so many young people taking the first step with TeenLine to reach out and talk about their problems,” said Declan Brennan, Chairperson of TeenLine. “We’ve visited over 100 schools this year [2016] across Ireland to talk with students about the service TeenLine provides and their mental health. That’s easy for them to say when you’re going on ancient and decide to look back on your teen years through rose-coloured glasses. Seriously, anyone who says it’s the best part of life has huge gaps in their memory, so if they complain about how easy you have it being 16, do the decent thing and ignore them. Don’t storm off in a huff and slam every door on the way to your room, that’s way too much effort. I suggest you simply tune out and when you think they’re done, say ‘I know’ as smugly as you possibly can, leaving them annoyed and you truly satisfied. CLARE schools and youth organisations are being encouraged to participate in the Young Social Innovator’s Social Innovators Action Programme 2013/14. The project-based programme, which is supported by the Vodafone Ireland Foundation, gives 15 to 18 year olds opportunity to examine social problems in their communities and bring about the changes they wish to see. The closing date for entries is September 30. Over 5,500 young people participated in last year’s Young Social Innovators’ programme. Projects from Scoil Mhuire, Ennistymon and Colaiste Muire, Ennis were among the 60 shortlisted for the annual YSI Showcase and Awards last May. Colaiste Muire, Ennis won the national award for Relationships & Sexual Health for their project entitled ‘Sexication’.
