Schools’ Covid crisis

WITH high levels of absenteeism among both children and staff during the current wave of the pandemic, it’s a difficult time in the county’s schools. Peter Walsh, principal of St Conaire’s in Shannon said that a lot of problems have to be dealt with. “I suppose there’s more Covid in the community and therefore there’s more in the schools. The children aren’t vaccinated so they’re bound to be more susceptible when it is in the community. “The lack of contact tracing also causes us an issue, in relation to it being pulled from schools. You see the schools replicating what’s happening in the community, I guess.” With teachers absent across all schools, it is increasingly difficult to find cover. “The vast majority would be vaccinated, but the problem is if they are off we are having difficulty replacing them, it’s a system-wide crisis. “We have a supply panel, a couple of supply panels actually here in Clare, but they tend …

The staff are very good and they’re well used to it, we’ll see how it goes.” While there is some familiarity around Covid now, he doesn’t feel that schools will be as relaxed when they reopen as they would have been pre March 2020. “No, I don’t think the stress is gone out of it. You’re depending on the community monitoring …

Fittest family style event at St Conaire’s

THERE will be a Fittest Family style competition held at St Conaire’s National School on this Saturday. Speaking this week, teacher Stephen McNamara explained what is planned. “We’re hosting a fittest family event to mark 50 years of the school being opened. Also, it’s to mark the official opening of the field behind the school. “It’s basically a fun event with a competitive edge and we have 54 families entered. The challenges are kind of in line with the fittest family programme, but they are adapted for the young children. We’re getting a special guest on the evening to come and present the winners with their prizes. Really, we want to highlight the importance of exercise and fitness in the lives of young children growing up.” The teams taking part have to meet certain criteria. “Its basically that there are four members per team, one member must be enrolled in the school, a maximum of two adults per team, one …
