Newmarket Celtic tee up another final showdown with Avenue Utd

Premier Division Soccer League Cup Group B Round 1 Shannon Town 1 3 Newmarket Celtic The first flagship silverware of the new Clare District Soccer League season will be contested by perennial title chasers Avenue Utd and Newmarket Celtic after the latter edged out neighbours Shannon Town in Lynch Park, Shannon on Wednesday evening. Scheduled to be both side’s competitive bow almost three weeks early, this derby refixture was still a much-anticipated barometer of where they currently stand as the assimilation of fresh blood only added to the intrigue of both side’s first real test. Far from showcasing their new talent, the home side, under former Newmarket Celtic coach Donal Magee, opted to remain steadfast to their tried and trusted, with left winger Jack Ryan the pick of that bunch as Town’s chief threat. Newmarket Celtic meanwhile mixed old and new, with former Lifford playmaker Nathan Redenze (now Boaventura) an existing addition to an already multifaceted attacking arsenal while impact …

Premier League wrap: Bridge United finish on a high

Lifford AFC 1 Bridge United 2 Bridge United secured a final day victory as Mark Colbert’s side finished comfortably in fourth place. A victory here for Lifford would have seen them finish fifth. However, this defeat coupled with Mountshannon Celtic’s victory over Shannon Hibs ensured that Adrian Walsh’s side finished sixth. Lifford will be relatively pleased with their season as despite some early poor results, they were able to finish comfortably in the middle of the pack. Leon Daly gave Bridge an early lead but that strike was cancelled out by Niall Guinnane as the sides retired to the dressing rooms level at 1-1. The second half saw both sides push forward in search of a winner but with little in the line for either outfit, the game lacked the necessary cut and thrust that both of these sides have displayed throughout the 2021/22 season. Bridge managed to find the winning goal when 16-year-old Darragh Hayes struck a late winner …

Love Shannon extends deadline for feedback on its plan

THE Love Shannon Community Council have extended the deadline for feedback on its Shannon Community Development Plan, which can still be viewed online. The Plan has numerous suggestions for Shannon, including one for improving awareness of the level of facilities available locally. “58% of the respondents to the Shannon Community Development Survey proposed the need for a multipurpose community hall or centre for Shanon. LSCC analysed this proposal in detail and noted that a range of community centres and halls exist in Shannon, each providing opportunities for community based activities. There is a risk that people are unaware of the range of facilities, of the activities that may be taking place in each and/or how individuals and groups might access these facilities for community purposes. It proposed that “Love Shannon Community Council will develop an online resource, informing the population of Shannon of the range of community halls/centres available in the community and outlining the activities currently offered in each …

O’Callaghan calls the tune for Shannon Town

A resilient Shannon Town held off the challenge of Corofin Harps to win the U-16 girl’s shield final on Sunday. Thantra O’Callaghan’s well taken goal midway through the first-half gave Shannon a lead they did well to preserve during what at times was a thrilling encounter. Corofin created plenty of chances and put their opponents under huge pressure. But they could not find a way past Shannon’s hard working defence and goalkeeper Ella Henchy who produced a series of excellent saves. Both sides served up a terrifically entertaining contest and plenty of moments of quality in last season’s postponed decider. Corofin centre forward, Grainne Burke, a threat throughout, came close to giving her side the lead in the 7th minute when her curled effort hit the cross bar. Burke and the impressive Keelan Fitzgerlad were both involved in a flowing move that ended with Ella Henchy saving Elisha Twomey’s half volley. But anchored by Ella Kelly’s classy performance in midfield, …

This project is entitled Between Old World and New World and was prepared by Olive Carey. Shannon social history connects old and new

NEXT Tuesday night will mark  the culmination of more than three years of preparation when the report of the Shannon Social History project will be launched at  Seán Lemass Library. The title of the report, Shannon-Between Old World and New World, comes from a quote from Brendan O’Regan and it was chosen to reflect two perspectives of Shannon’s story-that of the people steeped in a traditional way of life, whose farms were purchased for the building of Shannon and those who settled in the fledgling town. The report brings together around 40 interviews that were conducted with long term residents. Written accounts were also donated to the project by people who were among the town’s earliest residents but have since moved away. Olive Carey co-ordinated the project and speaking about it she said, “Over the last three years it has been a fair amount of work to record the interviews, then transcribe them, then collating them and putting all of the …
