Shannon Golf Club team wins prestigious national tournament

SHANNON Golf Club was the winner of the 25th JB Carr Diamond Trophy Tournament, played recently. The over-60s Scotch foursomes took place in Wicklow with over 2,000 players competing from early April across all four provinces. Over five months, more than 4,000 rounds of golf were played, with the finalists welcomed to Woodenbridge in September after a two-year break due to the pandemic. The four provincial winners – Royal Curragh, Shannon, Castlebar and Dunmurry – were piped over the iconic bridge at the parklands course on the first evening, following their managers who were holding high their respective provincial flags. The draw took place that evening, pitting Castlebar against Shannon and Royal Curragh against Dunmurry. Castlebar was the only team to have previously reached the finals. The Saturday morning brought very wet and challenging conditions, with other courses in the locality closing. Stephen Hennessy wins president’s prize at Lahinch PRESIDENT Padraig McInerney’s prize was played for at Lahinch last weekend when the first three positions were filled by players who play off a handicap of 3. Stephen Hennessy was the winner with 38 points from David Fitzgerald who had a similar score while Conor Waters was third a point behind on 37. Austin Slattery (12) was next on 37 followed by Padraig Slattery (8), also on 37 The leading score on Friday was provided by Anthony Garrihy (5) with 34 points from Greg Young (6) with 33,Liam Pyne (6) with 31 and Brendan Day (11) with 32. Hoey emerged as the winner following the nine hole play off when he returned 61 points to win by one from Jonathan Fennelly (14). Vivian Killeen (14), also with 60 points, was third followed by Michael Sullivan (16) with 59, Frank Doherty (10) with 59, Brian McCarthy (5) with 58 James Byrne (12) with 58, Tommy Dalton (13) with 57 Kerrill O’Mahony (4) with 57 and Michael O’Friel (4) with 56. The lady captain’s (Ann White) prize was played for at Spanish Point last weekend when the format was 18 hole stableford. Maura O’Boyle emerged as the winner with 35 points. Evanna Farrelly was second on 33 points with Helen McGrath, also with 33 points, in third spot followed by Yvonne O’Keeffe with 32 points. Kathleen Haugh with 19 points and Evelyn Kelly with a similar score won the nines. Eileen Murrihy won the best over 30 handicap section with 31 points. Valerie leads Irish team By Seamus Hayes ENNIS woman Valerie Hassett will captain the Irish team for the European senior ladies team championships in September. The team will be led by recent Irish senior women’s close champion Suzanne Corcoran (Portumna) and includes a host of experience including 2016 British Senior Women’s Champion Laura Webb and Gertie McMullen (The Island) who has won both the Irish Senior Women’s Open and Close Championships in the past.The championship takes place in Mont Garni Golf Club, near Charleroi,from September 4 to 8. Barton Shield BALLYNEETY golf club in Limerick hosted the north Munster section of the Barton shield last weekend when six Clare clubs were in action. In round one Ennis beat Roscrea, Lahinch beat the host club and East Clare beat Dromoland while Kilrush went down to Adare Manor and Woodstock lost out to Limerick. Seven Clare ladies to represent Munster

Seven Clare players are included in the Munster teams for the Women’s and girls inter provincial matches which will take place at Castledargaan Golf Club from Juloy 10 -12. Munster will play Ulster on Tuesday, Leinster on Wednesday and Connacht on Thursday. There are four from Clare on the women’s team and they are Sarah Cunningham (Ennis), Lisa O’Shea (Shannon), Aideen Walsh (Woodstock) and Sineád Sexton from Lahinch. The other members of the team are Catriona Griffin (Killarney), Rachel Thompson (Cork) and Paula Walsh (Doneraile). The team is captained by Jennifer Hickey. The Clare players on the girls team are Shannon Hegarty (Ennis), Niamh O’Dwyer (Lahinch) and Leanne O’Shea (Shannon). The other members of the team are Jemma Barry (Douglas), Anna Dawson (Tramore), Corrina Griffin (Killarney) and Emily Walsh (Limerick).
