Fairy play to Shannon’s Hazel as she pursues stage dream

STEEPED in musical heritage, 25-year-old Hazel Park has chased her dream, and is now living it. After spending a few years teaching, she left education to go to London for an MA in Musical Theatre Performance and is starting her first professional role this week, playing Tinkerbell in the pantomime Peter Pan at University Concert Hall Limerick. She told the Clare Champion that Shannon Musical Society has been a big part of her life and her family. “My grandparents actually founded the society, my family have been in it over the years and I joined when I was 18.” Hazel has also been involved with Muse Productions and the Ennis Musical Society, while she was nominated for Best Female Singer in the Association of Irish Musical Societies Awards in 2020. Confession and Christmas shopping at unique Clare event

A UNIQUE Shannon event last week at which people could have their confession heard while they did their Christmas shopping proved hugely popular. An annual event pre-Covid, the first Mercy on the Mall event since 2019 took place at the Town Centre on Thursday, December 8 and saw a team of priests make themselves available to hear confessions as people did their shopping. Parish priest Father Arnold Rosney said it had been a busy day. “We started the day with a blessing of the crib in front of the Adoration Chapel. It’s a lifesize crib and a lot of people love it, especially kids, who like to go close to it and touch the glass at the front of it. It’s a lovely feature. We had children from St Senan’s school singing festive carols for the blessing. “Then we had Mercy on the Mall from 1pm to 4pm. We had 12 priests and I’m very grateful to those who joined …

Protesters pledge to keep up pressure on Bus Eireann

A PROTEST regarding the poor state of Shannon bus services was held at the Town Park recently with the promise of more demonstrations to come. Speaking on the day Shane Doody, chairman of Ógra Sinn Féin for Clare said, “Today we are here to voice our anger and our frustration towards Bus Éireann. For far, far too long now, we have been ignored and utterly disregarded both as a community and as customers.” While there have been more complaints about the bus service over the last few months, he says it has never been good enough. “If we are being honest with ourselves, has our bus service ever been fully functional? “For years now we have been struggling with a second tier bus service that is inefficient and unequipped to manage Shannon’s ever growing population – with which Bus Éireann have failed to keep up. “It is high time now that Shannon is equipped with a competent bus service that …

Record daily minimum temperature for November in Clare

SHANNON weather station has recorded a new temperature record for a November day. On Friday, November 11, the temperature at the Met Éireann weather station in Shannon never dropped below 14.9 degrees celsius. This represented a new November highest daily minimum temperature record for Ireland. It was an exceptionally warm month of November in general at Shannon, well ahead of the long term average for the month. It was also particularly sunny for the time of year, with 71 hours and 36 minutes of sunshine over the course of the month, 21% more than the long term November average. On the negative side, the amount of rainfall for the month in Shannon was 44% greater than the long term average. The Met Éireann report for the month said, “November 2022 was a mild and windy month, dominated by Atlantic low pressure systems to the west of Ireland, with the airflow mostly between southerly and south-westerly. “This set-up steered many tropical …

New Shannon campus part of €1bn investment by Limerick and Clare Education and Training Board

A NEW multi-million euro College of Further Education campus in Shannon incorporating a national centre of excellence for aviation will form part of a €1bn investment in the region over five years by Limerick and Clare Education and Training Board. The announcement of the €1bn investment was made at the launch in Shannon Airport of Limerick and Clare Education and Training Board’s new five-year strategy. Setting out its vision to enhance the quality of learning and life in the region, Strategy Statement 2022 – 2026 outlines the role the ETB will play over the five years of the plan. This includes fulfilling the personal, social, economic and employability needs of the community it serves. The launch took place at Shannon Airport and was attended by the ETB Senior Management Team, ETB staff and invited guests, including Minister of State for Skills and Further Education, Niall Collins TD, and other public representatives. Protest in Shannon to highlight ‘unreliable’ bus service

A PROTEST regarding the standard of the 343 bus service serving Shannon is to be held at the Town Park at 12 noon this Saturday, December 3. It is being organised by the Clare Sinn Féin Ógra group and spokesperson Aoife Bennett Murray says they want to draw attention to a long-standing problem. “People have been looking for the 343 service to come on time and be reliable for years. Mike McKee, the late councillor, was fighting for that before he died, “Donna McGettigan has been getting onto them. But they’re not listening, they’ve put on a few double decker buses, but people are still saying the buses are coming 25 minutes late, people are losing out on wages, missing classes. “We’re having a protest and we’d like if a Bus Éireann representative came down to hear people and what they have to say about the whole situation.” A student of architecture at the University of Limerick, she says she …

Carrs in the driving seat at Shannon Mr and Mrs event

ANDY and Clara Carr were the winners of the Mr and Mrs fundraising event, jointly run by Wolfe Tones and Shannon Musical Society on Friday. MC for the night was Aodán Fox, and he said it was a great success. “It was a super night, really, really good. There was great support, a great turnout, and the reaction was fantastic. It went down a bomb,” said Aodán. Of the winning couple, he said, “Andy is a former chairman of the GAA club. Clara was a bit nervous about getting up on the stage but they were great. They were voted winners on the night, it went by an audience vote. That’s how we raised the funds, the audience could buy votes. “After the first round we opened up the polling booths and they could buy the votes from them. New Ryanair services linking Shannon to Naples and Porto

RYANAIR have this morning announced that they will run services from Shannon to Naples and Porto in next year’s summer season. Speaking to the Clare Champion this morning the airline’s head of communications Jade Kirwan said, “We announced our summer schedule last month and there were two new routes, to Beziers and Newcastle. We’re announcing two more routes now, to Naples and Porto. “Naples would give you access to Pompeii and to the Amalfi coast, it’s a real good access point for travelling around and getting the most out of Italy. Porto then, in the north of Portugal, people go and stay there, it’s a cultural city, there’s lovely architecture, cathedrals, those kind of things. It’s a bit more chilled.” She said it is another vote of confidence in Shannon Airport. “In terms of route capacity we are going from 22 this summer to 26 this year.
