Breaking: 150-200 jobs to be created as Ryanair set to take Shannon hangar

SHANNON is set to receive a jobs boost with Ryanair about to do a deal to take on a hangar locally, with 150-200 jobs set to be created in aircraft maintenance and repair. It is understood that Shannon Group and Ryanair are on the brink of signing a contract under which Ryanair would take on the hangar, which had previously been used by Lufthansa, but has been vacant of late. Securing the business with Ryanair would be seen as a coup for Shannon Group, while the jobs to be created would largely be skilled and well paid. In recent years there has been a concerted effort to develop Shannon as a hub for aviation related companies, and there are now more than 80 of them in the area, with thousands employed.

Marvellous Malta is a must for the month of May

John Galvin was beguiled by the cultural wealth, fabulous food and warm hospitality of the Mediterranean island. When we think of Malta, perhaps nothing immediately springs to mind, except for vague notions of sandy beaches and blue Mediterranean waters. Malta in fact is an intriguing mix of cultures, having spend much of its history conquered by other countries, only gaining its independence in the 1960s. We explored the islands as guests of Visit Malta, to mark the start of direct Ryanair flights from Shannon to Valletta. We managed to pack a lot into three days but I’d suggest that the delights of the islands should be enjoyed at a more leisurely pace. With two flights a week, it would be easy to tailor the perfect trip. Malta’s first capital, Mdina, gives the feel of an open air museum, with its narrow, traffic free streets and mix of architectural styles, dating back to medieval times. The ramparts impart breathtaking views of …

Derek to enjoy fruits of labours as Peach closes after 29 years

AFTER 29 years and after placing a huge number of people in jobs, Shannon company Peach Recruitment is closing down. Since the start it has been run by Derek Barrett, a well known figure in Shannon, and he said he really enjoyed the experience. “It was a great business to be in, because ultimately we were helping people. The amount of people we placed in this town has been fantastic. We were always delighted to do that. “There were others we couldn’t place, but we always tried to help them, whether that was improving their CV or giving them career advice.” We always tried to do right by the jobseekers. They were always the number one priority, I know people would say the client, the employer is the primary one, but we would have taken a view that if we get it right for the candidate it all works out. If you get it wrong, it doesn’t work out for …

Warm welcome for visitors at Shannon barbecue

AROUND 250 people turned out for a welcoming barbecue held at Wolfe Tones on Saturday, with around 100 of them newly arrived Ukrainians. It was the brainchild of the Love Shannon Community Council as the group’s Assistant Secretary Fiona O’Brien Maxwell explained. “We had a member of the group who said it’d be great if we could organise a barbecue and get someone like Wolfe Tones to host it for us. I know the operations manager through work, we supply Wolfe Tones with a lot of stuff so I got onto Paul Hogan there and he said just give me a hand in pulling one or two bits together and we’ll make it work. It grew legs from there, basically it was a welcome barbecue and it was open to the whole town.” All were welcome to attend and Love Shannon gave transport to the club for the new arrivals. “The invitation was extended to the town basically, to whoever …

Opportunities for Shannon, but realism also required, says Henry

In an exclusive interview with the Clare Champion, Conal Henry says he aims to get Shannon Group and the airport out in front of the challenges it will face in future PÁDRAIG Ó Céidigh lasted less than six months before resigning in frustration as chairman of Shannon Group, while his predecessor Rose Hynes faced often scathing criticism during her time in the role. Clearly being chairman of Shannon Group is a role that exposes one to widespread scrutiny. While someone with Conal Henry’s background certainly can’t have been convinced to take up the role for the money, why has the Belfast man accepted the role that Mr Ó Céidigh branded “the most challenging job in Irish aviation”? “First of all, and this sounds crass, but I really mean it, you don’t do things for money, you do things to deliver better outcomes, to effect change that benefits people. “I’m very happy getting involved in a project like Shannon, I find …

Use Shannon to cut Dublin Airport pressure, says Crowe

OVER the last decade Dublin Airport has established an ever-more dominant position in Irish aviation, but at the moment it can’t deal with the crowds of passengers it has. With this in mind, Clare TD Cathal Crowe has called for Shannon Airport to be utilised to alleviate pressure on both inbound and outbound flights. Issues with security are at present leading to significant delays for those using Dublin Airport as a terminus for their travels. Deputy Crowe said acknowledged following a meeting with Dublin Airport Authority’s CEO Dalton Philips and his management that they were “doing everything possible” to recruit additional security staff. Delays in the Garda vetting process and also enhanced screening measures were proving a huge impediment in terms of having staff on the ground, he said. “I have suggested to the management that flights should be diverted to Shannon Airport, where there is plenty of additional capacity. “I believe that Shannon could play a significant role in …

Regarding its location, the planner’s report on the application said, “The proposed 1.718 hectare greenfield site is located at Rineanna South, within the Shannon Airport lands. “It is north of the Shannon Estuary and south west of Shannon Town. The proposal would be accessed off the N19 and backs onto the airport runway. “The site is currently occupied by a manicured green area. There are large industrial buildings to the west of the proposal site, the runway to the north, the N19 to the south and more green area to the west. …
