THE chair of Clare Labour is among objectors to plans for the construction of housing in Lahinch, saying the proposal should be refused until the local sewage treatment system is improved. John Talty Construction Ltd has applied to Clare County Council for planning permission to construct a development of eight houses, comprising six detached and two semi-detached homes together with all associated site development works, wastewater pre-treatment and connections to public services at Cill Stuifin, School Road, Attycristora, Lahinch. Objecting to the plans, Denis Vaughan who in January was elected chair of the Labour Party in Clare, argues, “There are reports of people swimming at that place becoming ill because of untreated sewage in the water. “For that reason permission should be refused until the sewage treatment system is improved. BROADFORD is set to be one of the first beneficiaries of a new €50 million plan to provide essential sewage infrastructure to rural villages. Clare TD Cathal Crowe said he was delighted that Broadford will get the infrastructure required, and that he would seek the inclusion of other parts of the county also. “Broadford, in East Clare is likely to be the first beneficiary of this funding but I will also be continuing my fight for similar infrastructure to now be advanced for Cooraclare, Carrigaholt & Doolin. “In the case of Broadford, a sewage scheme has been talked about for the past 40 years. Lands were acquired about 18 years ago, design phases have all been completed and the project is now fully shovel ready. The situations in Cooraclare, Carrigaholt and Doolin are very similar. SWIMMING has been banned indefinitely by Clare County Council at Kilkee beach following an instance of sewage entering the water from the pumping station this week. The latest ban is the second in six months at the same location and for the same reason and comes just days before the annual charity Christmas Day swim at the beach. On Wednesday afternoon, Clare County Council issued a prohibition notice on swimming at Kilkee beach “until further notice”, on the instruction of the HSE and in consultation with Irish Water. “The restriction has been introduced following the failure of a storm surge vessel at the Irish Water pump station in Kilkee. The situation will be kept under review,” the council statement said, while confirming that signage notifying the public of the prohibition on bathing would be erected. A ‘geyser’ of raw sewage was spotted gushing from a sewer pipe in a North Clare seaside village last week. The incident  happened at Liscannor on the Wild Atlantic Way on Wednesday and according to locals, the sewerage scheme in the area is so bad that it gets blocked up “about once every two weeks”. Patrick Blake of Liscannor Harbour Amenity Organisation described the scene in the seaside village on Wednesday morning. “When we saw the sewage geyser first, it was 20 feet high. It was around 11 o’clock and it took us about 20 minutes or a half an hour to get someone to take a photograph of it and, by that stage, it had gone down to about 10 or 11 feet,” he explained. “There was a group of people there in white coats and they said they were agents for Irish Water,” he continued.
