Seven up for Newmarket Celtic

Newmarket Celtic A 3 Avenue United A 2 (after extra time) Newmarket are the Clare soccer cup champions for the seventh successive year but for much of this evening’s final at Frank Healy Park in Doora it looked as if they would have to settle for the runners up spot. In the end, however, the experience that Newmarket have gained in recent seasons saw them stage a tremendous rally and an injury time goal levelled the tie at 2-2 and forced extra time. The game was in the last minute of the extra period and fans were asking when the replay was likely when the champions struck for the winner, a score which sparked off great celebrations amongst their loyal fans Two Mark Roche goals in a three minute spell shortly before half time gave Avenue United a 2-0 interval advantage and this was still the position at the three quarter stage. Club or county…..players must choose!

Players are going to have to choose between club and county. That’s according to Clare senior football and league champions Kilmurry-Ibrickane whose manager Aidan Moloney issued a strong warning after his charges completed the senior double for the second year in a row when beating Miltown St.Josephs in the Clare Champion sponsored Cusack cup final at Cooraclare this afternoon After winning their seventh successive league crown Kilmurry-Ibrickane considered not accepting the cup. Eventually team captain Martin McMahon came forward, accepted the cup but declined to raise the trophy as is traditional having delivered one of the shortest acceptance speeches on record. He thanked the team’s supporters for attending the game and thanked opponents Miltown and then promptly left the podium having led his club to a 0-14 to 0-11 win over their neighbours and great rivals Miltown St. Josephs. Clare make seven changes for trip to Portlaoise

By Seamus Hayes There are seven changes in personnel to the Clare senior hurling team for the Allianz league quarter final clash with Laois at Portlaoise on Sunday from the side which started against Galway in Cusack Park last Sunday. Omitted are Domhnaill O’Donovan, Jack Browne, Paul Flanagan, Colm Galvin, Shane Golden, Cathal McInerney and David Reidy and they are replaced by Conor Cooney, David McInerney, Pat Donnellan, Colin Ryan, John Conlon, Bobby Duggan and Conor McGrath. McInerney, Donnellan, Ryan, Conlon and McGrath were all introduced during the second half last week and played a big part in helping Clare to earn a draw in that game. Of the seven left out this week, Shane Golden is under suspension having been sent off last week while Colm Galvin is injured and missed his club’s under 21 A championship semi-final on Friday evening when they lost to Sixmilebridge at Clarecastle.
