CLARE County Council has confirmed the removal of drinking water restrictions which were affecting 3,300 customers in Kildysart, Coolmeen, Corofin and Ruan. The restrictions were in place in Kildysart and Coolmeen since July 29 and in Corofin and Ruan since August 14. Approximiately 1,500 customers of the Kildysart Public Water Supply scheme were advised as a precautionary measure that water on the scheme was not suitable for drinking due to the discolouration of the water caused by increased manganese levels. However, extensive testing of the water provided by the Kildysart Public Water Supply scheme has shown that the water being supplied continues to meet the drinking water standards. All water restrictions have been lifted as a result. The existing water restrictions in Corofin and Ruan will remain in place until at least Friday, Clare County Council has confirmed. On Thursday evening last  ( August 14), approximately 1,800 customers were advised, as a precautionary measure, that water in Corofin town and its environs, Ruan village and the area served by the Killeen Group Water Scheme was not suitable for drinking due to the presence of an algal bloom in Inchiquin Lake. Customers are being advised that the water supply should not be used until further notice except for the flushing of toilets, flushing of internal house plumbing systems and laundry. Customers are also advised to discard ice cubes in fridges and freezers. It is also advised that the water should not be used for personal hygiene such as showering and the brushing of teeth. Drinking water tankers are being provided outside Bofey Quinns Pub, St Patrick’s Community Hall, the Grotto, opposite Kerry Agri (Corofin) and adjacent to the Dalcassion Pub (Ruan). …

Water restrictions imposed on Thursday on two North Clare villages will continue over the weekend, Clare County Council has said. A public water alert was issued after Inchiquin Lake was closed to public due to algal bloom. An estimated 1,800 customers of the Corofin and Ruan Public Water Supply are being advised that water on the scheme is not suitable for drinking due to the presence of an algal bloom in the raw water for the supply at Inchiquin Lake. Clare County Council confirmed on Friday that restrictions will remain in place until at least Monday. The algal bloom has arisen due to the extended period of dry weather, elevated temperatures and reduced water levels in the lake. THE rich history and heritage of two well-known landmarks on the outskirts of Ennis were graphically illustrated during a recent outing as part of National Heritage Week. Last Friday evening, more than 40 people gathered for an outing organised by heritage officer, Congella McGuire and the Clare Archaeological and Historical Society. Society secretary, Edel Greene, and Ms McGuire led the group around the old church and graveyard at Templemaley and the adjacent Ballyhee Cut. Templemaley Church dates back to around the 10th or 11th century and very little is known about its founding saint, Maley, although his name lives on in Kilmaley and was previously associated with a spring well at Fountain, known as Tobermaley. In the 1830s, locals believed the church was founded by St Finghin of Quin and his feast day had previously been celebrated there.
