‘Citizen’s arrest’ helps Gardaí catch armed robber

A man in his late 20s has been arrested and is being detained at Ennis Garda Station after members of the public gave pursuit when a shop in Ennis was robbed at knifepoint on Friday morning. O’Connor’s shop in the Market in Ennis was held up at knifepoint on Friday morning at approximately 9.45pm. A female staff member was in the shop at the time and was confronted by a man who was wearing a hoodie and brandishing a knife. She handed over a sum of money to the man, who then fled from the shop in the direction of Parnell Street. Two members of the public observed the man fleeing and gave chase, catching up with him at the Parnell Street Car Park by the river wall. Gardai, who were alerted to the incident, promptly attended the scene and apprehended the suspect at this location. A knife and a sum of money was recovered as part of their investigation. …

Three men sentenced for robbery of pensioner

THREE Clare men have been sentenced for their part in the robbery of a pensioner who left his home by bicycle following the ordeal and continues to live in a nursing home. Noel Garry, aged 20 of Cooraclare, was sentenced to three years after pleading guilty to his involvement in a second robbery at 68 year old Michael McMahon’s home in West Clare. Mr Garry was described as the “most culpable of the three” involved in the case before Ennis Circuit Court this week. The Circuit Court was told that Mr McMahon cycled through the night from his home after it was targetted by around five criminals in two separate robberies on February 21 and 25, 2012 in which a total of between €7,000 and €8,000 was stolen. 21 year old Joseph Lernihan of Finnuremore Park, Mullagh, who admitted involvement in both robberies, was given a three year suspended sentence and ordered to pay the victim compensation of €3,790. 20 …

Terrorised pensioner cycles 30 miles to sanctuary

By CAROL BYRNE A 67 year-old man cycled 30miles with all his belongings in the dead of night to a nursing home in Ennis to take up residence after being subjected to two robberies at his rural West Clare home, Ennis Circuit Criminal Court has heard. The details emerged at the sentencing hearing of Noel Garry, (20), of Cooraclare; Shane Donnellan, also 20 years of age of Clohanbeg, Cree and Joseph Lernihan, (21) of Finnemore Park, Mullagh on Monday. They all pleaded guilty to robbing €3,000 from the man at his rural home in West Clare on February 25, 2012. Joseph Lernihan also admitted a further charge of robbery of €4,000 from the same man days earlier on February 21, 2012. Pensioner cycled 30 miles in dark after two robberies

A-68 -YEAR-old West Clare man cycled 30 miles. with all of his belongings, in the dead of night from his home to a nursing home in Ennis  after being subjected to two frightening robberies a circuit court has heard. The details emerged at a sentencing hearing at Ennis Circuit Court of three accused, Noel Garry, aged 20, of Cooraclare; Shane Donnellan, aged 20, of Clohanbeg, Cree and Joseph Lernihan, aged 21, of Finnemore Park, Mullagh, who were  all charged with robbing €3,000 from the injured party at his rural home in West Clare on February 25, 2012.
