Reports of sex assault on the rise in county

Rape Crisis Mid-West says it has received 1,120 calls in first eight months of 2021 MORE Clare victims of sexual assault are seeking support from a regional support centre following a 29% rise in non-aggravated local cases over a 12-month period. The number of sexual assaults, which were not aggravated in the Clare Garda Division, rose from 17 from January to August 2020 to 22 for the same period in 2021. This increase was revealed at a Joint Policing Committee meeting this week. Rape Crisis Mid-West Centre, which deals with calls and counselling services in Limerick, Nenagh and Ennis, has experienced a major increase in calls for support over the last 12 months. This has resulted in an increase in waiting times, with some victims waiting up to seven or eight months for regular non-emergency counselling. Increase in number of contacts made to Rape Crisis Centres

A SIGNIFICANT 23% increase in contacts made to Rape Crisis Centre helplines during the three months of lockdown has been described as “not surprising” by Rape Crisis Midwest. As Rape Crisis Midwest’s Ennis centre became one of the first to re-open in the Midwest after lock-down, Rape Crisis Network Ireland (RCNI) has released statistics showing how Covid-19 has impacted survivors of sexual violence and Rape Crisis Centres. The RCNI data was drawn from six centres, including Rape Crisis Midwest, during the Covid stay-at-home period from March-June 2020. According to Verena Tarpey of Rape Crisis Midwest, “The report published last week reflects what Rape Crisis Midwest experienced on the ground over the last number of months. Our centre had to close in March, but we remained very much open to our clients. Staff were flexible in their working hours adjusting to the needs of clients – many taking place at night and over weekends where survivors were able to find a safe place to talk.” The …

Dainty daisies help victims of sexual abuse

RAPE Crisis Midwest will host the annual Dainty Daisy competition at Treacy’s West County Hotel, Ennis on Saturday next at 8pm. Featuring men from across the county, it is a beauty pageant with a difference. All the men will dress in their best outfits, answer questions on stage and then perform a party piece. The host of the show this year is Tony Cogan, who was the overall winner of the competition last year. The participants this year are Brian ‘Bodyke’ O’Dwyer, the manager of Brogan’s Bar in Ennis; Fr Ger Fitzgerald, a local priest; musician Damien Gormley; Cragganowen man Martin McMahon; teacher Rory Chesser; farmer and politician Paul Murphy; Tom Naughton from Tubber; Dermot Fetton, manager of the Cloisters Restaurant; surfer Dara Keane; Pa McLoughlin, who hails from Clarecastle; ESB employee Paul Whitmore and veterinary assistant Sean Linnane.
