Man sent for trial on rape charge

A 28-year-old Clare man has been sent forward for trial to the Central Criminal Court, charged with the rape of a woman in 2014. The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is accused of raping a woman in her home on the night of October 26/27, 2014. He is further charged with criminal damage at the injured party’s home, where it is alleged he damaged various bed clothes, assorted clothing belonging to the injured party, the wall of her main bedroom and various crystal ornaments, intending to damage the property. Inspector Kieran Ruan told Ennis District Court on Wednesday that the Director of Public Prosecutions had consented to the case being sent forward for trial to the Central Criminal Court. Garda Niamh Browne gave evidence of serving a Book of Evidence on the accused. Clare man charged with rape in Galway

A 20-year-old County Clare man has been charged with the rape of a woman in a Galway city apartment last year. The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared before Galway District Court on Monday where he  denied two counts of raping the woman on the night of July 23-24, last year, contrary to Section 4 and Section 21 of the Criminal Law Rape Amendment Act, 1990. Garda Conor Barrett gave evidence of going to the man’s home earlier that morning and arresting him. He took him to Galway Garda Station and charged him there. He said the man replied “not guilty” to both charges. Garda Barrett said he had no objection to bail provided conditions were attached. Judge Aeneas McCarthy remanded the man on his own bail of €1,000 with no lodgement required, to appear before the court again on March 11 for service of a Book of Evidence. Man denies raping teenage boy

A Clare man has gone on trial accused of raping and sexually abusing a teenage boy who he used to give money to. The 70- year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, has pleaded not guilty to three counts of anal rape and two counts of sexual assault of the youth at various locations in the county between 1999 and 2000. The jury at the Central Criminal Court in Dublin on Monday heard the man admitted to gardaí that he touched the then 14 year old’s penis on one occasion but claimed that nothing else happened. He told gardaí during interview that he used to give the boy money for food because he felt sorry for him. Opening the trial, prosecuting counsel, Dominic McGinn, SC, said that the accused allegedly took the boy for drives in his car to places where the abuse took place.
