Charity run raises over €5,000 for Pieta House MidWest

OVER €5,000 has been raised for Pieta House MidWest thanks to the support of those who took part in UL Hospitals’ Group annual charity 5k run and walk. Over 200 people completed the course around Dooradoyle and Raheen, the majority of them hospital staff. Another 25 health workers completed a 5k in Nenagh to help raise funds for Pieta House, which offers counselling and other suicide and self-harm supports to people around the country. Speaking after presenting a cheque for over €5,000 to Pieta House, UL Hospitals CEO Colette Cowan said, “Our annual 5k is part of our Healthy Ireland strategy at UL Hospitals. Two of the pillars of this strategy are looking after your mental health and promoting physical activity for people of all abilities. Bridie’s 60 years in the Pioneers

HAVING been a member of the Pioneers since she was a teenager, it’s no surprise that Bridie Hendrick describes herself as “very loyal” to the organisation. Bridie will receive her 60-year pin at a ceremony on June 12 at SS John & Paul Church, while others who have also reached certain landmarks will be recognised. Speaking about her decision to throw her lot in with the organisation, she says, “I joined it when I was 14 in Armagh. At that time, you’d go into the probationers and the Pioneers when you were 16. There were eight in my family and we all joined. One of them broke his pledge but all the rest of them stayed Pioneers. Non-smokers and non-drinkers the whole lot. In those days, there were no women going into pubs or things and you didn’t see drink much. It was easier for people than it is now.” While times have changed since her Armagh childhood in the …

A first All-Ireland senior final date for St Flannan’s

By Seamus Hayes St Flannan’s 2-4  Presentation, Kilkenny 1-5 There were a number of outstanding individual displays in an all round impressive team performance as St Flannan’s qualified for a first ever All-Ireland senior camogie final appearance when overcoming Presentation from Kilkenny at Clarecastle on Thursday afternoon. In the final they will play Seamount, Kinvara or Magherafelt from Derry, who replay their semi-final this weekend. [doptg id=”47″]In Thursday’s replay, the Ennis school laid the foundations for the victory with a superb defensive display. Aoife Keane was outstanding at centre-back, while the full-back trio of Aleisha Malone, Emma O’Connell and Carol Browne also excelled. The decision to deploy corner-forward Laoise Ryan in a sweeper role was also a key factor for the Ennis team. Elsewhere, Sinead Quinn and Aoibheann Malone excelled and caused huge problems for the visitors. Hank Krabbe Scholarship for Ennis student

Ennis engineering student, Graham Britchfield from Rockmount has been awarded a Hank Krabbe Scholarship at University of Limerick. A fourth year electronic and computer engineering student, Graham will receive a scholarship grant and is also eligible for co-operative education or summer placements at Analog Devices, sponsors of the scholarship. In total, six of UL’s top performing engineering students were awarded Hank Krabbe Scholarships. The top graduating engineering student is also eligible for the Hank Krabbe Medal and an accompanying grant of €5,000. Speaking at the scholarship awards ceremony, Denis Doyle, Vice President and General Manager Limerick Manufacturing, Analog Devices said; “There is a very strong, long-term and successful relationship between Analog Devices and the Electronic and Computer Engineering Department in UL, with many graduates of this course contributing to the success of Analog Devices. “Electronic engineering will continue to be at the heart of our future and with that in mind we have designed the awards to promote the brightest, …
