Champion photographer’s exhibition takes off at airport

AN exhibition celebrating the career of Clare Champion photographer John Kelly goes on display at Shannon Airport from this Friday and will remain on show throughout the month of August. The exhibition, Between You, Me & The Wall, was previously on display in Glór last year and drew on his 25 years at work in The Clare Champion and is now being brought to this second venue, in conjunction with Shannon Airport. Speaking this week, John said he had really enjoyed selecting the work that features in the exhibition. “I even found stuff I had forgotten I had. It’s nice to go back and see how things have changed, see how people have changed, cars have changed, hairstyles have changed, attitudes have changed; everything has changed in 25 years.” When he entered newspaper photography in the early ’90s, the technology being used was wildly different to today. “We started off in the dark room, shooting all black and white film, …

Man admittted grooming child on Facebook

A MAN who used  Facebook to make contact with a young boy, who he admitted planning to commit a sex act with, has been sentenced at Ennis Circuit Court for the possession and distribution of child pornography. The 33-year-old man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was arrested by gardaí on August 28 of last year. Detective Garda TJ Molloy told the court that the accused had planned to travel to Cork to meet the boy, who he believed to be about 10 years of age, the following day. The man appeared before Judge Carroll Moran at Ennis Circuit Court, where he pleaded guilty to knowingly distributing child pornography for the purpose of sale, distribution, exportation or show on dates between August 7 and August 28, 2013, at a Clare address. He also pleaded guilty to the possession of child pornography, namely naked male photographs, showing genitalia, at a Clare address on August 28, 2013. Detective Garda Molloy told …

Lovely Old Miltown on display

A HUGE amount of old photographs, postcards, articles from newspapers and other memorabilia is going on display at SuperValu in Miltown Malbay from March 30 to April 6. Most of the material comes from the late Kathleen Kelly and her son, Cyril and daughter-in law-Patsy now have her archive. “Cyril’s mother Kathleen used to take an awful lot of photographs so we have all of those and we decided to let the public see them,” said Kathleen. One magazine article from the 1930s will be on show. “Malachy Hynes was a journalist from Miltown Malbay and he wrote an article for a travel magazine. He wrote about four places and I have a picture of the four of those. It’s laminated and there’s the writing in the middle and the four photographs around it,” said Kathleen. Early 20th century Clare in photos

LIMERICK  City Museum and Archives (LCMA) is to host a major photographic exhibition featuring rare images of South East Clare and Limerick City, dating back to the early 20th century. “The Street” exhibition, comprising of photographs from The Haselbeck Collection, will be launched at Limerick City Hall on Monday, January 13 by Mayor of Limerick Kathleen Leddin and Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht Jimmy Deenihan. Franz S. Haselbeck worked as a professional photographer in the Mid-West from 1912 until his death in 1973. He cycled all over Limerick City and throughout South East  Clare to photograph the important events of his time, including the War of Independence and major construction projects, as well as everyday events. Today, The Haselbeck Collection is regarded as one of the most important collections of 20th century Ireland. Some of the earliest photographs featured in the exhibition relate to the Irish Volunteers and the Royal Irish Constabulary in 1913 and 1914 at a time …
